Installing and Activating McAfee

Hi,
I bought a Dell computer with a three year subscription to McAfee but can’t find a way to activate it. It’ll update but not activate and expires on the 31st.  The Dell I bought just wouldn’t boot up right out of the box , they’ve had to replace the hard drive and the memory on the computer.  When they replaced the hard drive they made me install the software and I downloaded McAfee from the website, Dell downloads. Dell Tech support told me they couldn’t send me a disc with the program and had to download it from there. Since the computer was dead on arrival I've never had a chance to activate it or make an account with McAfee.
I should first start by saying that when I first tried to install the program I got this message :
" Unable to Continue Installation. Your Mcafee software installation cannot continue because a file on your PC is either missing or not working correctly. To fix this, you may need to download and install a Windows file. Please read the FAQS for complete instructions. Once completed log in to your Mcafee account to download and install the software again."  .
Ok, so I followed the FAQS link and was told to download and install MSXML3.msi and MSXML.msi which I did but I still get the unable to install message.
So there was a button to skip or cancel, I choose skip and it installed the software and it than ran fine and would update itself just fine but ... I couldn't activate it. Everytime I tried I'd get this message :
“We’re sorry, but we’re having trouble activating McAfee products. You can begin using your products now, but you won’t receive automatic product updates.
Don’t worry, we’ll ask you to continue activating your McAfee products once the problem is fixed. For more help with this problem, please contact McAfee Support. “
I've only got a few days left to activate it before the 14 day trial ends so I spent some time online with McAfee Tech support yesterday, in the end I gave him full control of my computer, let him download the fixes he said I needed and claimed that once I rebooted I'd be fine.
Well that didn't work, So I uninstalled McAfee following the intructions on their website and and reinstalled it again and everything happened just the same way. I still can't Activate it, I keep getting that message.
I contacted McAfee again and this time it seemed they didn't really want to help me. They can't confirm I even have a copy of the program because one has never been registered in my name and kept telling me the only way to fix the problem was to go and buy a disc.
Ok, I've already paid for this program so there is no way I'm going out and buying it again. So anyone out there have any suggestions for me? I really don't know what to do next.
Thanks for any and all help.

If still no joy and you are tired of going in circles, uninstall McAfee, run the uninstaller tool, and install a free AV. I removed McAfee on my new Dell and use FREE Microsoft Security Essentials, but all the free ones listed here are good. FREE SECURITY SOFTWARE

To uninstall your McAfee consumer product using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.

First, go to the McAfee Security Center (via the icon in your system tray) to DISABLE each of the individual McAfee components that you plan on removing.

Next, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove components of McAfee Security Center.

   1. Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

   2. Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
   3. Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
   4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
   5. Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.

Note: Windows Vista/Windows 7 users must right-click MCPR.EXE and select Run as Administrator.

   6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.
If the message Cleanup Unsuccessful is displayed, you can view and save your MCPR log files for analysis by Technical Support.

Well after a few more hours with McAfee and Dell, Dell will now be sending me out a cd so that I can load it from there which should solve my problems. Assuming I uninstall my current demo copy of McAfee properly... Thank you both for your replies.
