Log attached. Thanks in advance for help :)

I know I had and / or have a virus PE_TRATS.A-O & TROJ_VUNDO.ACA on my notebook (maybe others too, I can't scan at this point).  Now I can't access the internet, my trend micro pc int sec 12 is not working properly, system restore doesn't work and icons have disappeared from my notification area toolbar.

I have tried to fix things with no luck, so here is the log.  I didn't see a box to check about formatting so I hope this comes over ok - if not, I know you will let me know.  :)

Thank you all so much for what you folks do here!  Margie

If that was the entire report, it found files that ComboFox had already quarantined and also in your System Restore so that is to be expected. Therefore, nothing new showed up.

Let's get your Java updated so that if you are able to get online again, you will not be so vulnerable. If you cannot get online now, you will have to use the second computer again.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

  • After the download, transfer it to the other computer's desktop. (When finished installing Java, you can delete the setup for the offline installation.)

  • On the previously infected computer, close any programs you may have running.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log from that computer.

That looks good. I just wish you could get online with that.

Let's remove our tools. After that, I'm going to send you to the Wireless board to see if they can help you get connected again.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

** NOTE: If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet please allow it.

OTMoveIt will not delete HijackThis in case you want to keep HJT so you can post a log in the future if you ever have another problem -- assuming the tool does not have a newer version at that time.
You can delete Dr.WebCureIt if you still have it.

You may still have some old infected System Restore points, so after you get your wireless fixed, and your non-functioning programs re-installed, please flush system Restore.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Consider installing the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: (Not recommended for Vista)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
b. SpywareGuard:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.

3. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads

4. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

5. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known
vulnerabilities.

6. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

7. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

8. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 8.1.0 or higher.
It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

9. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java.
The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3

You can go here to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.

Remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
Reboot.

10. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trendmicro.
TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content.

The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

Red for Warning
Yellow for Use Caution
Green for Safe
Grey for Unknown

11. Here are some helpful articles:

"I'm not pulling your leg, honest"
by Sandi Hardmeier

12. This is an excellent resource for users of all levels. General computer maintenance as well as internet security is covered.
Rootkits for Dummies
(Paperback)
by Larry Stevenson (Author), Nancy Altholz (Author)

That's about all I can do on this board because it appears that the malware has been cleaned up.
The link for the Wireless Board is posted a few replies above, so please try over there, or if under warranty have Dell Support help you reinstall the wireless.

Last couple of questions, do I use that OTmoveit on my desktop and notebook?  And its ok to remove everything from my flashdrive?

Oh and should I remove and re-install my trend micro before or after I get my internet back?

On my desktop my java and adobe are older versions, so I am going to remove and re-install them, is that a good idea?

Thanks once again for all your help.  There is no way I could have done that without you, and I am sure you saved me a bundle of money.  Your kindness is greatly appreciated!!  Margie :smileyvery-happy:

Last couple of questions, do I use that OTmoveit on my desktop and notebook? And its ok to remove everything from my flashdrive?
Yes, use OTMoveIt on desktop and notebook as long as both have the tools and their files on them. If I were you, I'd leave the programs on your flashdrive for a week or so -- just in case you need any of them in the near future. They do get updated, but if you should get into a situation in which you can't download anything they are better than nothing at all. They do time out after a while, though, so they will not work in about 2 weeks.

Oh and should I remove and re-install my trend micro before or after I get my internet back?
I would do it now. Make a Restore Point (in case anything goes wrong). The sooner, the better that you have a clean working version of TM.

On my desktop my java and adobe are older versions, so I am going to remove and re-install them, is that a good idea? Yes. Actually, last night Sun Microsystems posted update 4 for Java, so that is now the latest. You can put that on the notebook that we installed #3 on when you get a chance.

Thanks once again for all your help. There is no way I could have done that without you, and I am sure you saved me a bundle of money.
You are most welcome. Short of a reformat/reinstall, we probably did a better cleaning job in order to preserve most of your data than any shop could do. The wireless still needs to be fixed though, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that one of the regulars on the Wireless Board can help you with that.

You're welcome. We try, but with these infections, sometimes they don't want to co-operate with us.

the last things i am trying to see if i can get back on the toolbar are the dell quickset and the synaptics ps/2 pointing devise . . . (i don't think these things are a big deal, but thought I'd try).

anyways, should i wait to see if i can do that first before the flush system restore, or maybe i could try and fix those after the flush, if needed?

and finally, after i fixed everything i could so far, i ran a scan and it picked up a trojan virus TROJ_DLOADER.R in 3 different files and quarantined them.  i haven't had any problems, so is it ok since they are quarantined?

Thanks Margie

You could flush System Restore now so it's clean this far. Then flush it again after everything else has been reinstalled.
