McAfee Security Advisor

I have an Inspiron 15 R Special Edition running Windows 8. The Win8 tile view has a double-wide tile named McAfee Security Advisor. When I select it, a screen appears with the message that "Security Information Not Available. There's a problem showing your security information right now."

I've waited many hours—days, actually—for the "right now" to clear. I've run all the McAfee and Dell checks to no avail. The McAfee Security Center indicates that my subscription is current; that everything is on, current, or active; and that "Your computer is secure (no action required)."

Does this feature really work? Or, should I turn it off or uninstall it?

Hi LHIIII,

McAfee Security Advisor is separate from your McAfee protection software. It provides security status updates from your McAfee software while giving you access to the McAfee software Home page. The McAfee app doesn't provide virus or malware protection. However, the tile for it should work.

You may completely uninstall McAfee using ‘McAfee Removal Tool’. For more information regarding McAfee Removal Tool, please refer to the link: http://bit.ly/K3nhdU.

Reinstall McAfee by logging into your user account registered with McAfee. During the installation uncheck ‘McAfee Security Advisor’ when you get the option and proceed with the installation. You may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/M6s5lM.

If McAfee Protection is working fine and you don’t want to uninstall it and don’t want the McAfee Security Advisor’ tile, you may unpin it from the ‘Start Screen’. Please follow the steps below:

  • Right click ‘McAfee Security Advisor’.
  • Click ‘Unpin’ to remove the tile from the ‘Start Screen’

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further questions.

Thanks for the link, but  it does NOT list Security Advisor as one of the suites their tool removes.

Apparently they feel they have a right to install uninvited, parasitic software on my machine so they can harass and spam me whether I like it or not.

Comcast gives me Norton Security Suite for free, so I have no interest in anything McAfee, and don't want ANY misc, random
garbage running on my machine to become a siphon for maleware.

McAfee SiteAdvisor software is a browser plug-in that provides Web site safety ratings. It is not a component of McAfee Security Suite. Security Advisor has been an issue on Windows 8.1: https://community.mcafee.com/message/309757

Considering that this topic is six months old, and that you are not satisfied with McAfee, I assume that you have been able to uninstall it and use an anti-virus of your choice by now.

Site Advisor is different from Security Advisor, which is a Windows 8 tile. I had the same problem on my brand new Dell. Tellingly, the Mcafee web site has no hits for Security Advisor.
