McAfee uninstall

Question

There are no words!!!! It took a better part of 3 hours to get this beast completely off my computer! I followed their directions to the letter. There were STILL folders,etc. on my system. These are newer directions from their forum.

1. uninstall all McAfee programs through add/Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel incl. Security Center. (Restarts are required)

2. Use the MCPR tool http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408302 This will remove all Mcafee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows XP SP2 or W2K Pro SP4 or Vista to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in Program Files but especially in C:\Document and Settings\\Application Data. You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the Application folders. Can be more than one!

4. Restart your computer

Even though I did all of this - I still had problems with McAfee showing up in Security Center. I ended up rebuilding the repository folder for Windows Management.

ky331 and Joe - I installed Comodo and Avast in no time at all. Working like a charm - just getting used to the new formats. Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, that happens when your brain is fried after spending forever trying to get that stuff off a computer. I just hit the wrong key and ended up with a blank post. Tried to format it, but it still doesn't look right. This has been a long two days!!! Mary

Your message was blank... but based on the title/subject:

To uninstall your McAfee:

1) first, go to the security center, and DISABLE each of the running components: anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, and any others.

2) then, go to your control panel, Add/Remove Programs: locate mcafee, and UNinstall it.

3) hopefully, steps 1 and 2 will suffice. but if you run into any problems, download and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool, MCPR, from http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

This tool will remove ALL McAfee products (2005, 2006, 2007) --- you cannot "pick and choose" to remove some, but not all. As such, if there's anything McAfee you want to keep [e.g., SiteAdvisor], be sure you have a copy of that program available for reinstallation.

4) Reboot. (Not sure if this is absolutely required... but it certainly couldn't hurt)

Hi,   I ran the MCPR and it tells me that the program fails and says that the cleanup is already running..?  This is killing me :O).  Are there any suggestions?

johnsni,   you didn't indicate your operating system:   the common version of the MCPR tool runs on Win XP/2K/2003/Vista [and may further require particular service packs]. if you're running 95/98/ME, that could be a problem.   assuming you have the more recent operating systems... since it says the tool is already running:  try rebooting your system [which will clear the running programs], and then load/run MCPR once.   if you still get any error messages, copy them exactly.    At that point, while it couldn't hurt to post the information here, it might be best to try consulting the McAfee forums.
