McAfee update question

Hello, last night i got a McAfee virus update and with this particular installation, I had to restart the computer. After rebooting, I got a windows message on the task bar that windows firewall was disabled. I of course corrected that immediately but can anyone tell me why windows firewall would have been turned off in the first place?
Also, I noticed that the McAfee icon on the desktop had moved to a different spot....that seemed strange. I checked everything to see if anything else was out of kilter and everything is up to date; virus scan, windows updates, ran a sweep with spysweeper...there's a new icon on McAfee firewall that says, lockdown. I guess there was some major updating with that.
I have windows xp sp2.

Not to worry I think.  I use McAfee AV and Personal Firewall Plus.  Personal Firewall Plus was recently updated resulting in a couple of new features including the lockdown option.  I find too that its not uncommon for the system tray icon to show black, or disabled.....It seems to do this upon startup at times but usually self enables after a brief period.  I don't think the program is malfunctioning in any way...it simply seems to behave a bit different as new updates come along.  Others may have some different opinions but overall I'm satisfied with my McAfee services.

Hi obx1, thanks for your reply. I know about the McAfee icon turning black then red after certain updates, the first time anyone sees that, I think panic sets in! Anyway, it was the windows firewall that was disabled - not McAfee firewall; still don't know why that happened but that did occur after McAfee updated their firewall. All was fine after I enabled the windows firewall...I was just curious about the reason . It hasn't happened since. It seems there's alot of people who hate McAfee - I've never had a bad experience with them and no viruses, worms, trojans, etc...I guess they're doing their job but there must be a reason that so many people have negstive opinions about them.

You may understand this already...though the Windows firewall in sp2 is fairly protective, generally one should not have two firewalls enabled at the same time.  Functionality will be affected if you do with both firewalls trying to do their job.  Enable one or the other.  I disable Windows firewall and rely on McAfee for best results.  I think people have other issues in their pc and/or particular operating system and their settings that result in their problems with McAfee.  My pc is pretty well fine tuned with WinXP and sp2 and the McAfee firewall does the job quite well.

Hi there again obx1, yes, I know that having two firewalls enabled can work against each other. I hear the pros and cons of having two... for now, I'm keeping both.  Not ready to part with windows firewall yet.:smileysurprised: LoL. Seriously, everything is runing like a charm so I'll leave well enough alone. Btw, I believe you're only the 2nd or third person I've come across that is satisfied with McAfee. I agree with your view as to why others may have a problem with them.

                                                                                          Thanks again for your input,

Final note....right...i will also keep both firewalls...sp2 and its security protection are important.  Just that I keep only McAfee enabled.  Good luck!.
