Mcafee missing Dell Service Tag

I recently downloaded a free trial of Mcafee Anti-Spyware. I already had some other Mcafee products that came with my Dell PC. After installing, the Mcafee software, it said it was unable to find my Dell Service Tag. I did some internet research to try to find a solution. Didn't find anything useful. I went to the Dell support site, and found a link that said something like "Find My Service Tag" so I clicked on it. This triggered the download of an ActiveX component from Dell, which then identified my service tag and express service code. After that, I went back to Mcafee and re-installed the Anti-Spyware. This time it was able to find my service tag. Seems like running that ActiveX from Dell somehow fixed the problem. Just wanted to share this, in case anybody else finds it useful.

..... but maybe not. I just got an update notification from the Mcafee software telling me I needed to register the Anti-Spyware. I tried, and it said it couldn't find the Dell Service Tag. Hmmm...

Hello,

Have you tried to just reinstall the program?

I have uninstalled, re-installed, etc. and still get the same problem. I've given up and left it uninstalled. It was only a free trial, so I can live without it.

The problem wasn't that I don't know what my Dell Service Tag is. I do know what it is. But, Mcafee is attempting to automatically locate the service tag and is unable to do so. It doesn't give me an opportunity to enter the service tag myself.

if your  a beginner with the computers in genral i advise you do not mess with the regestry it stores all your computers information but i personaly dont like mcafee but try avast.com and install avast its free for 12 months but only click the home edition it works just as good and you have to regester but its all free its exleant ive had it for about 2 years i havent had a problem yet and ive installed another antivirus and i uninstalled avast to see if it was working properly and its great no viruses or trojans

What you can do if you like is to uninstall the program then go into the registry
-Start-Run-regedit-ok
***Becareful of removing from Registry because it can sometimes cause undesirable results***Always back it up first, to backup just highlight the folder then select file-export-save it onto the desktop and export.***

Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ and remove McAfee.com folder

-Then goto My Computer-Local Disk C:-Program Files-remove McAfee folder

Then try to reinstall 'cause I know McAfee support will just tell you to uninstall and reinstall, there might just be a problem with the registry.

As for your service tag, go to Start-Help and Support-then click on Computer Information. or goto Control Panel-System-button near the bottom support information

Hope this helps
