Msmsgs.exe – bad image at boot.

Question

I get the following at boot Msmsgs.exe – bad image. Application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\es.dll\ is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

It comes up when I boot into windows. I click ok and it goes away. I have run Spyware Doctor, Webroot Spysweeper, Adaware, and Kaspersky's Anti Virus and I can not get rid of it. Any ideas what causes this error and what I can do to get rid of it. thanks,

Go to http://www.virustotal.com/

and browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\es.dll\ to upload that es.dll for scanning by 32 AV and anti-malware engines. It should report 0/32 (0%) if that file is clean.

Report back if otherwise what it finds.

It came up 0/32. It came up clean. It said it was analyized before, but I have never run this program. I reanalyzed it and it came up clean.

It doesn't sound like you have malware- maybe a corrupted es.dll file? To absolutely rule out malware I suppose you would have to post a HJT log.   You might want to first post this over in the XP forum: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=sw_winxp

Well here is where I am at so far. I figured it was in startup, so I ran msconfig. I found it would error when it ran this startup line... C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe” /background I figured I would do a reg hack and delete it from HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Run, but when I look in the run key it is not listed. I click on refresh and still nogo. So far I am at disabling it in msconfig. I would like to get rid of it permanantly though.

I found it under HKeyCurrentUser and deleted it. So far so good lets just see if it comes back.
