Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.  Reboot

Step 2

Check for proxy server settings in your browser, the following are the most common used.

Internet Explorer:
Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings". ok and apply.

Firefox:
Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection. "No Proxy" should be selected, unless you have one set up yourself.

Chrome:
Select -> Tools menu -> then "Options", then go to "Change Proxy Settings", then "LAN Settings" , then take out the check mark for "Use a proxy server for your LAN" if set, unless you set this up yourself.

Safari

• Launch Safari
• Go to general settings menu
• Then in Preferences/ Advanced
• Then on line click Proxies change settings ...
• Click Internet Options, then click the Connections tab, click Network Settings.
• Disable option (uncheck) for the use of proxy server ...

Step 3

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine. 
Please perform the following scan:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.com
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.pif
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.   
• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs         1. DDS.txt
           2. Attach.txt
• Save both reports to your desktop.
• The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.
   
• Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Step 4

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

There is no malware showing in your latest logs, there are a few other issues that need to be addressed. I dont know if you read the warning in my opening reply about P2P programs. We do insist that you uninstall any/all P2P programs before we offer assistance. You have uTorrent installed
P2P and file sharing are one of the main conduits for malware writers to distribute thier goods, why make it easy for them and expose yourself. This is only one avenue but a very frequently used one.

You have User Access Control (UAC) turned off, this is a safety feature of your system and should be turned on, I recommend that you do so.

Please uninstall the following from Uninstall a Program via the Control Panel if present:

Ask Toolbar
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

I also note that you have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.

Your Antivirus program is outdated, this is not good and should be updated at your earliest convenience. If the licence has expired there are plenty of free AV programs available. Microsoft Security Essentials is a very good free Antivirus/Malware/Spyware combination and will give you adequate protection. If the Firewall is included and outdated, turn on Windows own Firewall.

     Thanks again for all of your help, this has been awesome.  I apologize for not deleting uTorrent completely.  I thought I had deleted it, but I must have just deleted the shortcut or something.  I never really learned how to effectively use Vista after being so familiar with XP and my computer has never asked me to update Java or Adobe or Anti-Virus.  The only issue I had was, when I went to scan with Hijackthis, it gave me a message that said, "your system denied write access to the hosts file."  It also said, for Vista, to simply exit out and right click on the icon and hit run as administrator.  When I did this, I didn't see the option to run as administrator, so i wasn't sure what to do.  I just clicked ok and had the scan continue.  Maybe I messed something up, or maybe because the UAC is on now, there's a problem, but it didn't make me do this the last time I ran it.  Here's the hijackthis log, and I'm always ready for new suggestions if you have them.

Thanks for all of your help.  I've read this advice and I'm already adding some of the add-ons for my Firefox browser.  Hopefully this won't happen again and I'm now definitely more protected than I have ever been.  Take care.
