Problems with Mcafee firewall plus

I recently started having problems with Mcafee firewall plus.  It started out maintaining a "yellow light" and continually asking me to verify my subscription even though my subscription was current.  I contacted Mcafee and a tech said they were aware of the situation and were working to fix the problem which should be taken care of on the next update.  That problem was but now I can't access features such as view summary report, application list, utilities, about personal firewall plus etc..   Before I had no problems accessing these features.

I have contacted Mcafee seven times and followed their instructions.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled using the add/remove function as well as clean install per their instruction.  Each time I ran a virus scan and was told their was no viruses found even after I ran virus scan in DOS per their instructions but to no avail.

I was told they would e-mail within three buisness days with more instructions but so far I haven't heard anything.

I also began to have problems with system restore and contacted Dell and followed their instructions and did a repair which seems to be successful.

Disk cleanup has also stopped working.  I purchased this system in January of this year and Mcafee came with it.  I'm really not liking Mcafee at this point

I know this is a long post but I need help and I'm getting frustrated with all of this.  I am considering doing a complete reinstall of Windows Xp to see if this will correct anything.

Thanks for answering my post.  I am very afraid as I am sure you can understand.  I am also not the the savvy person when it comes to  computers.  I have read your FAQ'S and I saw that Ad-aware was mentioned.  I too downloaded Ad-aware and I was wondering if this could be the problem?

As I said before, I am not the most computer savvy but I am learning little by little and for most things I need step-by-step instructions.  You said I must put Hijackthis in a folder ind the root level of the c: drive.  I am unsure how to do that.  Can you offer me any help with this?

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Hi lizabug, If you would like us to take a look, we will need you to follow the directions below.  Please also understand that we are all volunteers with families and real jobs, so once your log is posted, please be patient.  We do work the logs in the order they come in, and one of the experts will assist with your log as soon as possible.  Thanks...pskelley

We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.

Download the zipped file from here: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt

Or....If you prefer an .exe version (saves a lot of time for novices) download the file from here:

http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Please unzip Hijackthis.zip or move the hijackthis.exe file into a new folder you create in the root (first) level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results. Don't place it on the Wallpaper, in a temp folder, or in the root level of the C: drive or the My Documents folder. It will create many backup files and they need to be stored in a unique Hijackthis folder.
Hijackthis FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:  http://russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

After downloading, and unzipping the hijackthis file into a safe folder you create (preferably a folder named HJT in the first level of the C: drive)...run Hijackthis, click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button.

Copy and paste the contents of the text file you save into a reply to this message. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste at http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt

Special Notice! Hijackthis is a powerful tool that edits the brains of Windows (the Registry). DO NOT FIX anything in the Hijackthis log screen without assistance from the experts! Most of the line items in the scanned log are normal for Windows operation. Hijackthis should identify the vast majority of your problems and enable us to help you clean them off your system.

Stay in this thread for continuity. Reply to this message.

Thanks,

Pskelley

Hi lizabug, I can assure you Ad-aware is a very good program.  You will, later in this process, receive instructions for configuring Ad-aware for maximun effiency.  Let's get this log posted first though.  Below is a link, this link is also in my first post.  if you click on the link, there are instructions for doing exactly what you asked. Read each item, but especially in item # 5 there is a picture tutorial for doing this. Make sure you look at all of the information, as it will guide you until the log is posted. You could also ask someone with more experience for help if you have access to that person.  Hope this helps...pskelley

Hi lizabug, First let me apologize for your post being missed. I do want to suggest that in the future, you watch the titles of the other posts, as very recently our experts posted a request for post updating to all on the message board.  This was an effort to keep what happened to you from happening.  The many, many posts have us swamped.  You can see in the previous information that we are unpaid volunteers who must take time from our families to help here.  You can also see by the highliteed individuals who are trained to do this work, that we are hopelessly outnumbered.  Enough moaning and groaning on my part, let's get you started:

With all other explorer windows closed please open HijackThis, then click on scan.  Then carefully place a check in front of each of these line items, then click on "Fix Checked".

Close HJT, then empty your recycle bin and follow the following instructions:

Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first.

Most of the Internet baddies can be killed by a one-two punch with Spybot and Adaware assuming these three factors are achieved:

1. Latest version
2. Configured correctly for running options
3. New definitions from update feature

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...print out the directions in the custom scan tutorial as a reference while you set these options for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Please note the free Spybot 1.3 does have a slight bug...it detects some DSO exploits falsely. Hopefully an upgrade will fix this. The problem is not serious and should not deter people from using Spybot. When this is finished, please dump the bin again, then reboot the computer.

Then do this, open HijackThis, then click on Config to the right. Then click on Misc Tools at the top right, then on the left near the bottom choose "Check for update online".  Follow the directions at that point to replace your version 1.97.1 of HJT with the newest version 1.98.  Then with the new version in place, post a new log for us to view staying in this same thread for continuity.  Thanks...pskelley.
