[RESOLVED] Redirected searches when using IE 8

Please review the following Hijack This log and provide any troubleshooting advice. I am getting redirects when I use IE8 and search using Google. I search on Google and click a link on the results page. The link redirects to a site that is not the intended destination. The unwanted sites seem to be other search engine results page like Scour.com, quick.search.results.com, and shop6-3.forless.com.

PC: Dell InspironE1505, Intel T2400, 1GB memory

Thanks, Canoo

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.

* Please be aware that if your issue involves Windows error codes the chances of resolution may be slim because some of these infections corrupt .exe files. The presence of windows error codes may also indicate hardware problems and could limit the success of infection removal.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them. *Please note also that not all of our tools work on 64-bit systems, so we may be limited in our procedures.

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.

If there is a problem after making changes to the system, to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERUNT.exe

Let me know after you have installed ERUNT.

No Reply within 3 days will result in this topic being closed, and I will remove it from my subscriptions. If you require more time, please let me know.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

-----------------------------------------------------

  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum. Do not attach them.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

On 5/30/2011 you removed Symantec AntiVirus? Were you using both Symantec and McAfee at the same time?

Let's run a scan with MBAM. * If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use the update link mentioned below to manually update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "lookinhere.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the files to the infected computer. Install the "lookinhere.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

Please download the FREE version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alternate link: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report along with any other requested logs into your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

Also please read carefully and follow these steps.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure Make sure that is selected. Click on Continue.

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.___log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. Don't forget to include your log from MBAM.

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

    • Viewpoint
    • Viewpoint Manager
    • Viewpoint Media Player
    • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology

Following that, remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner (a good utility to keep and use regularly.):

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

** Select to download the SLIM version.

** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything saved in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.

** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.

1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the "Analyze" button. When the list of files comes up, click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.

5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.

  • Please download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 26  to your Desktop.
  • You will find it here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4648
  • Click the "Download" button. Make sure you do not by accident download any of the other programs advertised on that page.
  • Do not install it yet.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version. NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

* Click Ok and reboot your computer. Let me know how things are running at that point and if your redirects have been fixed.

Were you using both McAfee and Symantec at the same time at one point?

McAfee interferes with many of our tools. We'll need to disable McAfee. If that does not work, please uninstall McAfee. (If you have the CD's, or use McAfee Support,  you can re-install it once we have verified that the computer is clean.)

  • Please open McAfee Security Centre
  • Under Common Tasks click on Home
  • Click Computer Files
  • Click Configure
  • Make sure the following are disabled by ticking the "Off" button.
Virus protection
Spyware protection
System Guards Protection
Script Scanning Protection (you may have to scroll down to see it)
  • Next, select never for "When to re-enable real time scanning"
  • and click OK.

Further info on disabling and re-enabling McAfee: http://help.aol.com/help/microsites/microsite.do?cmd=displayKCPopup&docType=kc&externalID=222820

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix (If you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now!) :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*

Please login as Administrator. If using Vista or Windows 7, do not attempt to simply run ComboFix with Admin Approval Mode.

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console instructions. It is already installed on Vista and Winows 7 versions of Windows.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

6. If Combofix detects any Rootkit/Bootkit activity on your system it will give a warning and prompt for a reboot, you must allow it to do so.

7. If Combofix reboot's due to a rootkit, the screen may stay black for several minutes on reboot, this is normal

8. If after running Combofix you receive any type of warning message about registry key's being listed for deletion when trying to open certain items, reboot the system and this will fix the issue (Those items will not be deleted)

* Additional information on A/V control HERE. * ComboFix is not intended for use with servers.

I did not run McAffe and Symantec at the same time, however Symantec was not completely uninstalled until after McAfee was installed and i ran a full scan.

I disabled McAfee and downloaded and installed Combofix. The Microsoft Windows Recovery Console was installed successfully. Combofix launched and i ran into somme problems. McAfee turned itself on and a prompt window popped up asking if i wanted to allow one of the programs to run. i allowed it. I disabled McAfee while Combo fix continued to run. This happened sometime after stage 3. Another window popped up and said a program did not run correctly and need to shut down. i did note the filename to either of these programs. After all 50 stages completed, my screen went blue saying something like there was a critical error. There was a lot of white text and it also said something about a memory dump.

I rebooted the computer and it seemed to reboot normally. There was not a combofix.txt file so I do not have a combofix log.

Here is the latest Hijack This after the last reboot.

McAfee was conflicting. It was not completely disabled. If you are still experiencing redirects, please uninstall McAfee.

Reboot,

Delete ComboFix, and download a fresh copy. Then run ComboFix again.I will need to see the log.

I completely uninstalled McAfee. It is a free version from ATT as part of my DSL service. I rebooted then uninstalled Combofix. Rebooted then dowloaded and reinstalled Combofix. Combofix launched and my computer gave me two beeps and I got an message saying Combofix detected McAfee Antivirus and Anti???( I can't remember what the second one was it was Anti something. i clicked ok and the message said it would continue "at my own risk".

Combofix ran through all 50 stages. There was a brief moment when a final line appeared in the Combofix window that said it was deleting files but almost immediately my screen turned blue with the same meesage I got before.

Here is the error message I got:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware of software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable, or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x853F8A50, 0x853F8E68, 0X1A83000C)

Beginning dump of physical memory

Physical memory dump complete.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

I uninstalled Combofix rebooted, reinstalled Combofix and re-ran with the same results. It detected McAfee and crashed to the blue screen with the above message.

Please run the following scans:

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please reboot into Safemode: Turn on the computer. Immediately begin tapping the F8 key. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

While in Safemode, try running ComboFix again so that you can post the log along with your log from Security Check.
