Trend Micro anti-virus incompatible with Windows 7
My old computer died. Bought a new one. Trying to get my old anti-virus back. Trend Micro 2008 is incompatible with Windows 7. Does anyone know of a fix for this or do I need to go buy Kaspersky or something like that and just start over fresh?

You will need to upgrade to Trend 2010, which is compatible with Windows 7.

Hi nancy.montgomery, and welcome to the forum:
I'll be honest with you; I 'm not a user of Trend Micro and can't answer your question directly. If you have an unexpired TM 8.0 there might well be a way to upgrade to a more current version for your Windows 7. TM certainly offers Windows 7 compatable versions:

When choosing an Anti-Virus, you have to ask yourself what your needs are. The needs of a typical home user are different than the needs of a business owner.
Assuming you are a home user, there are very good free AVs available that are compatible with Windows 7, and competitive against many paid products in testing by independent websites. (Trend Micro, while a reputable vendor, does not participate in the testing I trust, so I cannot comment on it).
- Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 is a free AV/anti-malware product. It has the advantage of simplicity and guaranteed compatibilty with your operating system. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of the paid products, but will probably meet most of your needs. Download and info here: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/default.aspx
- Alwil's avast! Home Edition v.4.8 is another free favorite here-abouts. It is somewhat more full-featured, but with this comes more complexity. It is due to release a new version 5.0 in the New Year. More info and download here:

If cost is no consideration, I can recommend Kaspersky or Eset NOD32 v.4.0 as excellent paid AVs. Paid AVs generally offer more frequent updates, better anti-spyware protection, priority access to update servers, and vendor support that the free versions lack. Free 30 day trials of both are available.
Edit: Sorry- slow typer here! If you are comfortable with TM, and wish to stay with it, go with ejn63's recommendation.

MSE works nicely with Win 7 and by having an AV written by Microsoft, you have the advantage of using one that is always going to be compatible and change along with with any OS changes that Microsoft may make. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/default.aspx

Hi nancy.montgomery. I tend to agree with joe53.I use avast home free and have done for many years without infection.Avast will warn and remove any nasties before you know it and I think it's great. When I build a pc for customers this is my Av of choice but I do say to the customer if you dont like it then remove it and try somthing else.
If you like TM then TM10 is compatable with win 7 but as I dont use it I cant recomend it.
AVG 9.0 is also free and also pretty decent.
