Updates - November 24, 2009
McAfee Labs Stinger v10.0.1.688
Stinger is a free stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather an on-demand tool to assist users when dealing with an infected system. It includes heuristic detection.
This version of Stinger includes detection for all known variants, as of November 23rd, 2009, of the following 1370 viruses and trojans:

Supports Windows ME/XP/Vista. Not sure about Win 7.
Full instructions and download here:

Comment: I've used Stinger for over 3 years without problems; in particular no false positives or conflicts. It does not update, except when a new version is released, thus I only usually run a scan once at that time. It takes about the same time as a Smart scan with a-squared, or a full scan with Windows Defender.

Microsoft has apparently released (and in at one case, RE-released) an "out-of-monthly-cycle" collection of Windows Updates. If you're set for automatic updates, you should be notified about any CRITICAL ones that are applicable to your particular system. For those who don't have updates set to automatic ---- or for those people who wish to consider the "non critical" updates --- you should manually go to Windows/Microsoft Update to determine what, if anything, is available for your particular system.
The following information was "lifted" from several posts at CoU.
