Vundo Trojan Virus

I have acquired a Vundo trojan virus on my home computer.  McAfee pops up a warning that it
has detected an infected file that cannot be repaired.

File Path:  C:\WINDOWSYSTEM\system32\awtqr.dll

When I respond to the warning to remove the file nothing happens.  It tells me the computer needs to be re-booted, but it is still there afterwards.

I still have internet connection and can retrieve my email and my itunes is working.  However I cannot get Internet Explorer to open at all.  So I cannot get online to download any type of fix.
The Virus Spyware Forum advised me to download HJT on a USB from another computer &
run it.  I was able to download cyberdefender on a usb drive & load it on my computer, but this didn't help my problem.

Here is the log from HJT:

If you are unable to access IE to download any tools, then you are going to need the USB key once again to download another tool.

Please download VundoFix.exe to the USB key. Then transfer it to the Desktop of the infected PC.
Once done;

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Glad to hear it

1. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
  • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnmjhe - nnnmjhe.dll (file missing)

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis

2. *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

3. Please perform an Ewido Online Malware Scan

  • When a dialog box appears asking you if you would like to download and install the ewido anti-spyware online scanner please click Yes to allow the download.
  • Click on Start Scan.
  • after the scan completes i twill produce a log for you, copy and paste the results of that scan as a reply to this thread
  • If any infections are found, (After you save the logfile), Click on Remove Infections.

I am going to be giving this computer to my son for college.  One quick question --what virus protection program do you prefer?  I am not happy with McAfee after all that has occurred...
Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with McAfee. But PC protection requires more than just an Antivirus program. Please review my closing comments

You may now remove/delete/uninstall the tools we used to clean your PC

Now that your log is clean

There are some final notes:
Disable and Enable System Restore
  • Lets create a clean System Restore point
    the instructions are here
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of
    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.u2.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the " Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: " Accept License Agreement".
    The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • Open Internet Explorer click Tools->> Options.
    Click Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    Click Custom Level.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click OK.
If it prompts you to save the settings, press Yes.
Next press Apply and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page
Update your Anti Virus Software

Use and maintain a Firewall You have one included in your McAfee Suite

Install IE SPYAD for protection against innocent looking websites that are not innocent

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently for critical updates

Backup your Important Documents and Files on a regular basis
  • To a disc or a USB key, not your Hardrive
