Vundo!! but not sure

I got a message from my McAfee antivirus that vundo and vundo.dll had been detected on my system. It could not clean or delete the files. My system became very slow and i kept getting the pop-up from the anti-virus about vundo and vundo.dll, so i tried restarting my computer. while shutting down it gave a blue screen saying some fatal error in logon ..and when the machine restarted it gave a winlogon error message. But now the vundo messages are not comming up. I am not sure if my system is infected. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks, Vikas

Go Here and download Hijackthis .
  • Save it to your Desktop
    Double Click Hijackthis.exe to run it
    Select Scan and when the Scan is complete Select Save Log File
    Save it to your Desktop
    It will open in notepad
    Copy and paste the results as a reply to this thread

When you compose and submit your reply, please make sure the box under your text which shows "Automatically convert carriage returns to HTML line breaks" is checked or your reply may not format correctly.

I am getting the following message when I am trying to post the HJT log . How should I avoid it ?


 


"Message Body: The message body contains the following prohibited content: 'C_A_L'  You must remove this content before submitting your post."


Infact it didnot even let me write that word, and i had to put '_' after every alphabet.

There are a few things to clean up in your log. But I don't see any active Vundo. Let's look a little deeper

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

1. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E3678D8-E348-480C-8A5D-07D65F45DF83} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedb.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PD0620 STISvc] RunDLL32.exe P0620Pin.dll,RunDLL32EP 513

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.


3. Go here and Download AVG Anti-Spyware
 ( 30 day free trial version) Save it to Your Desktop
 
Double Click AVG Anti-Spyware-setup
(It will create its own folder)
Once the program starts You will be at the Status menu
  • Under "Your computers Security"
    Click Update now (next to last update)
    After the update loads
    Under Automatic updates Uncheck download and install updates automatically(recommended)
    (you can always select maual updates the next day)
At the top toolbar Click Scanner Then the settings tab
  • Under How to act? Set default action for detected malwareTo Quarantine
    Under how to scan All boxes should be checked
    Under Possibly unwanted software All boxes should be checked
    Under reports Select Automatically generate report after every scan
    Uncheck Only if threats were found
    Under what to scan Scan every file should be highlited
Exit AVG   (But do not run it yet)
 
Reboot into Safe Mode
This can be done by
  • Restart your PC, and after it starts, but before you see the Windows Splash screen
    Begin tapping the F8 key twice a second untill you reach another menu screen (black background with white menu choices)
    Use your arrow keys and select Safe Mode and then Enter

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click scanner
    Select Complete system scan

Once the scan finishes
  • Select Apply all actions (The items found will be quarantined)
    Click save report as (Another window will open)
    Save it to your desktop
    (By default It will be saved in the AVG folder as)
    C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware 7.5\Reports
Exit AVG
 
Reboot your PC in Normal Mode->>Re run Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log.
  • Double click the report-scan txt. you saved to your desktop
    It will open in Notepad
    Copy and paste that report as a reply to this thread
Your reply should include
  • a fresh Hijackthis log
    your report_scan.txt log from AVG
You may have to post the results in more than one reply

No problem about the delay.

That scan came up clean as well.

The presence of this file in your log C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

Means that Windows is searching for System updates, whihc can slow things down.

Go HERE and get the required Windows updates, then Reboot your PC. Then reply with the status of your PC

Yes it did.  In addition i think the AVG anti-spyware had slowed down things a lot during start-up so I had to uninstal that too.  What are the next steps?

Ok. There are some things we are going to fix in Hijackthis. They are legit programs, but not required to load on start up. They will continue to function when called upon. But the idea here is to increase PC speed and performance.

Also there have been many complaints about Windows Defender slowing down PC performance. I know it did on mine, so We are going to address it as well.

1. We need to temporarily disable the Real-time Protection on Windows Defender.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => Options
  • Scroll down and uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender

2. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checksbeside the following entries
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis

3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of
    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.u1.
    Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    Click the " Download" button to the right.
    Check the box that says: " Accept License Agreement".
    The page will refresh.
    Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once done Reboot your PC ->> Post a fresh Hijackthis log and tell me what progess we have made with performance

Hey Bamjim,

 

Thanks for those useful tips.  The performance is not slow like earlier after all these fixes. however at bootup OS takes quite sometime to load up whatever stuff it is loading.  I am not sure if its windows defender scanning some stuff or its something else.
