WIndows XP Security messes up anti-virus
Last week, my husband had a box appear on his computer saying he may have virus and to click on Win XP Security. He did and I don't think he should have, as I believe it's a Trojan or something like that. Now, his Norton won't work, Spybot won't work and when I tried to download AVG it thanked me for downloading, but wouldn't go any further. I also tried uninstalling Norton, but it couldn't complete rthe reinstallation. What to do? I know he's very vulnerable right now.
Only thing I could l think of was to a System Restore to before this happened.
Any other thoughts? He has Win XP.
Thanks

Try running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
* If you are unable to save it. Try renaming mbam-setup.exe before saving it. Rename it to peggymb.exe.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe (or peggymb.exe) to install the application.
- Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Make sure that everything is checked

- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and Paste the entire report into a New Message on the HijackThis Board. Also include a fresh HijackThis log. Instructions for downloading HijackThis are at the top of that forum.
Extra Note:Click Remove Selected.
1. Just click the New Message button in the HijackThis forum here: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack
to start your own thread requesting assistance for a follow-up check to be sure the malware is gone.
2. In the Message Body window that opens, simply Right-Click and select Paste.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

arvindac: if you can't access malwarebytes from the infected PC, you should download the file (as BugBatter described) to another (good) PC, then transfer it [via memory stick, or CD-R/W] to the infected machine, and try to install/run it. Granted, you may not be able to update it on the infected machine, but hopefully, the database that's included may suffice.

Hi!
It didnt strike me to try this way. I was very excited to move it from my jump drive to desktop (malware removal software), however, to my disappointment double clicking the icon does not make it run. Does this mean vista virus this time is more powerfull?? Does this mean I can not do anything bout it???

"to my disappointment double clicking the icon does not make it run."
RENAME MBAM before you transfer it to the infected computer.

This reply is not current to your post and you probably have done something about your issue by now, but I will say this " there may be a lot more that may be needed to be done besides running malwarebuytes". "Malwarebuytes is NOT as a fix all for all nasties"
Some nasties can go beyond the restore point and may even be able to go beyond that. IMO
