antivirus software alert II

I'm getting software alerts on another computer that are similar to the antivirus software alert posting on 9/11. These alerts were triggered when I started a Verizon Internet (McAfee version) scan. Verizon IS and MalwareBytes scans shows no viruses. Another IS security scan starts after the Verizon IS scan showing multiple viruses along with the security alert messages. I  also lost the ability to display Web pages. A blank page appears with Done displayed in the lower left corner for multiple sites. I'm including a hijacjthis log.

Sorry about having to repost this error for another computer. I thought this computer was secure.

Thanks for your help,

Tom

Hello Tom and welcome back,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any malware issues you may have with your system.
  • Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
  • Either print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully, if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
  • Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
  • If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:27811
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [odpfcamb] C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local\Temp\agivuluob\xamnsyulanw.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.  Reboot.

Step 2

Please download OTM by OldTimer.
Alternative Mirror
Save it to your desktop.
Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.
  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    :Processes

    :Files
    C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local\Temp\agivuluob
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [CreateRestorePoint]
    [EmptyFlash]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Purity]
    [ResetHosts]
    [Reboot]

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Step 3

user posted image Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 4

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
More info here:
http://ask-leo.com/viewmgrexe.html
http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/viewpointmediaplayer/index.phtml
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology
  • Anything else with Viewpoint in its name

What i`d like in your reply :-

  • Log from OTM
  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • Fresh HJT log

Not sure what happened. Received the following massage after OTM deleted the user's tempory files.

OTM has stopped working. Windows is searching for a solution to this problem.

A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I have a blank screen, wallpaper background only, and no desktop icons. It's been this way for about 20 minutes. Restart?

Also received a message at startup that Verizon IS removed a trojan. This was before running OTM.

Could not download SecurityCheck. Received a message that  the source file could not be opened from both download sites.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Re-boot your PC and tell me the status, your security program has probably seen OTM as a threat and killed it dead.

Looks like the reboot was successfull.  There are two desktop.ini icons on my desktop that were not there before.

The message that I get when I try to download Security Check is the following:

C:\Users\Tom\Downloads\SecurityCheck.exe could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

Received the following message from Verizon IS: I selected the restart later option. I'll leave my PC running until I hear from you.

McAfee disabled an infected file on your PC. Restart your PC st that we can fix it.

OTM created the following folder, 10032010_140258. No log file exists, only subfolders, all empty

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Those two files are present because OTM alters settings before it runs, it Shows "Hidden files and Folders" these are reset at the end. McAfee has crippled OTM during its run hence no reset was done.

I`d really like to see OTM run, it will clean up a lot of dross for us. Disconnect from the Internet and turn off your security so it does not interfere with OTM then run as follows :-

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.
  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local\Temp\agivuluob
    :Commands
    [ClearAllRestorePoints]

Post the log from OTM and a Fresh HJT log in your reply. Also status report, improvements? issues? Leave security checks for now.

I got OTM to run without being stopped but I'm not sure of the results. I turned off real time scanning and the firewall in Verizon IS. Started OTM with the second set of instructions. Saw the log messages for deleting user's temp files and then OTM stopped running as before. I removed McAfee Security Suite as a start up item under System Configuration and rebooted. Started OTM again but this time I did not see any messages for deleting temporary files. OTM did run to completion. I'm including the logs for both OTM and HiJackThis.

No problems now. Verizon IS is quite after OTM completed. The desktop.ini icons still appear on my desktop. Can I delete them now that OTM completed? Also, should I let MalwareBytes start as a start up program?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

For some reason OTM has not run correctly, try to run it again please with Security turned off and disconnected from internet as before:

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.

  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    :Commands
    [ClearAllRestorePoints]

Post log in reply....

Do not under any circumstance delete the files you mention from the Desktop!!

Could you verify the commands before I try again. These commands are different from the previous posts.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Yes those are correct, I`m cleaning out System restore cache, this will also create a new clean restore point. Also clearing all temp folders etc again. Nothing sinister

OTM does not finish. McAfee Security Center is turned off as a start up item.  Same messages as before. Here are the log messages up to the cancellation.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

If you got the same alert as before it means your security is still running. These are the instructions from the McAfee forum :-

Double-click the taskbar icon to open SecurityCenter

Click Advanced Menu (bottom)

Click Configure (left)

Click Computer & Files (top left)

You can disable VirusScan and tell it for how long over at the right.

If you click the Advanced button at the right you can then go to Active Protection on the left and uncheck it.  Don't forget to click Apply and OK.

How is your system responding, any specific issues. Also do you still see those two files you mentioned earlier on your Desktop?

I'm using Verizon Internet Security Suite. Verizon IS has has it's own front end which has different options then the ones you listed for McAfee. I've turned of real time scanning and the firewall through the Verizon IS front end the first time. These are the only options I can see comparable to the McAffee options you listed. I do not see any options for active protection. I see another possible item that I can prevent as a start up item that may be related to security. I also want to see if any McAfee services are running that are not related to start up. Sound like a plan?

I'm not having any further problems. Yes, the two files are still on my desktop.

Thanks,

Tom
