dellstat icon on taskbar - spyware

Question

i saw a message in the 'general hardware' section regarding the same problem i'm having...a dellstat icon appearing on my taskbar.  i emailed dell tech support and it appears to be some sort of spyware.  i cannot seem to get rid of it.  any ideas?  the email from dell tech support suggested that i restore my system to a time prior to the icon appearing, i tried that, but may not have gone back far enough (i was getting ready to go on a 2-wk vacation).  i ran adaware and ms antispyware - no luck with either.  i googled dellstat and found one thing...the post with derek having the same problem.  i'm running xp professional.    ANY suggestions would be appreciated, this is totally ANNOYING!  thanks in advance...   marian

House Call , and Panda Software .Please write down the full path and filename of anything that these programs cannot repair/delete.2. Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy . This is another free and very effective spyware/malware removal tool. It runs very well along side of Ad-Aware SE Personal.***Very Important***Before you run either of these programs, please update and configure according to the Ad-Aware Tutorial and Spybot S&D Tutorial . Run each of them with a reboot in between. If these steps haven't fix your problem proceeded to the next.Download HijackThis from: Here , then follow these instructions: Create a folder on the root drive, (Usually C:\), called C:\HJT HijackThis will create a backup file to use if a restore is necessary, so please DO NOT run HijackThis from a temporary location or your desktop. 1. Go to 'My Computer' (Windows key+e), or by double-clicking on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop. 2. Double click on 'C:' 3. Right click and select New ->Folder. Name it HJT.Unzip HijackThis to its permanent folder. Launch HijackThis by double-clicking on 'HijackThis.exe'. Click the 'Do a system scan only' button. hi spotcheckbilly (aka george), thanks for your reply. i followed the instructions, ran the virus scans (no virus found), then downloaded and ran spybot search and destroy, rebooted, and that darn thing (dellstat icon on task bar) is still there. i followed instructions for hijackthis and posted my log to be analyzed. thanks again for your time, hope someone can figure this out, it's bugging the heck out of me! ;-)

Your problem is probably related to your Dell printer.  I had the same problem after installing a Dell 720 to a new system.  Immediately, the dellstat icon appeared at the bottom of the screen.  The way I corrected it was to uninstall the printer and software.  Reload the printer software and when you get the screen to provide Dell information regarding the printer usage select no.  Normally, when Dell ships a new system all the software and drivers a preloaded on the system.  It worked for me, hope it does for you.

I alsp have dellstat and have tried all of the above tools, to no avail.

I had a Dell printer installed but deleted it when I got an HP. Is deleting from the CP the wrong way to uninstall? What should I do now?

I used the uninstall method. Does the icon still appear for you? Have you tried to uninstall? After I was able to determine that it was associated with Dell (and not some "phantom" spyware), I contacted tech support to let them know...to this day I've been waiting for a reply...I'm not holding my breath ;-)

Dellstat is not spyware.  I've contacted Dell and found out that Dellstat is part of the Dell printer software that is used to monitor printer functions on your system.  To remove it, uninstall the print and reinstall ensure that you uncheck the option to submit information to Dell.  From then on you should only see the icon come up with you reboot you system and it's only tempory and then disappears.  Hope this helps.

Go to Control Panel>add/remove programs, and then find the Dell Printer stuff on the list.  You might notice a 'dell printer logger' on this list.  Remove it.  Voila.  Save yourself from heaving to reinstall your printer software.
