temp files accumulating and windows error messages
I have an Dell dimension desktop that has been giving me trouble. It started with a STOP Ox0000008E error that I would get on a regular basis. I also had a Wendows error message on start-up. I also have found that on start-up, I don't have any pictures show up for example when I am on the internet. I have to go into internet options each time and click the show pictures box from the advanced options menu. Finally, I can get to some places on the internet, but other places it won't connect to (like mcafee, lavasoft, etc...). I ran a MacAfee scan in safe mode and it quarantined one thing and found several others that I deleted, but there was one that I could not Rem-Adm_ProcLaunch!171. Also when I go to my documents and settings folder and click on my name and properties, the "size on disc" starts to run like I am acumulating a whole bunch of files. I can't see any temp files even though I am guessing they are there. I am pasting a HiJackThis log below and need some help. Thanks.

You removed Ad-aware and the folder is empty, but it is still listed in Add/Remove?
If that is the case, let's try this:
Delete the empty Lavasoft Ad-aware folder.
Run a scan with HijackThis.
Place a checkmark next to the following:
O23 - Service: Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service (aawservice) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe (file missing)
Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked".
Using HijackThis once again:
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will now be presented with a screen.
To delete the Ad-aware entry simply click on the Lavasoft Ad-aware entry and then click on the Delete this entry button.
Close HijackThis. Reboot.
Please post a fresh HJT log. When you say the files increase, are they copies of legitimate files, or are they filenames you do not recognize?

Actually, I don't think the files are increasing, I think my computer was just trying to count them. The last time I had trouble, I had a whole bunch of temp files that kept getting added to my computer so I think I was a bit alarmed that the same thing was happening again, but it doesn't look like it is. I am still having the same issue. When I go to remove programs, it is there but there is no option to change or delete.
When I try to load the program, it asks me if I want to remove the old program and when I say yes it gives me a windows installer message

Open a command prompt:
Click start >run > type cmd and hit Enter
Into the command window type the following commands one at a time, hit Enter AFTER EACH LINE
sc delete aawservice
Then reboot.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running. If everything is going smoothly, we'll clean up ComboFix and SDFix, flush System Restore, and you'll be in good shape.

I am a little confused on the directions. Is there only one line to enter? The computer didn't seem to know what to do if I hit enter after each command. It seemed to go through when I typed sc delete aawservice and then enter.
Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem. I still get the same messages.

You did well. Good job!
It's time for some housekeeping.
Because the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, along with the folders created by these tools.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points: (Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
If you have installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as part of your cleaning procedures, keep it updated and use it to scan every so often for malware, or upgrade to the paid version for realtime scanning and auto updating.
The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. Microsoft's widows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date. Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
3.You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php
6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.
7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trend Micro. This is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 yet. TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content. The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site. Red for Warning Yellow for Use Caution Green for Safe Grey for Unknown
8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
