Vostro 220, HDD compatibility

Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 220 which belongs to my mother in law, running Windows 7 32-bit. Her HDD is dying so I'm looking to replace it with either 500GB or 1TB.

First of all, will the 220, old as it is, handle a 1TB HDD?

Second, if I upgrade to WIn10 (which I'm assuming I'm going to have to do with Microsoft no longer supporting Windows 7), is it possible to install Win10 64-bit or will it have to be a 32-bit version?

Thanks very much :-)

Don't spend anything on this 11 yr old model. Windows 7 is supported with just security updates until 2020. There are no windows 10 drivers for this old model so don't install windows 10.

Buy Mom a new computer if you can.

Yes, it will handle a 1TB drive.

It is an old machine but I do have Windows 10 32 and 64-bit running fine on multiple Vostro 200s, 220s and 230s

Do yourself a favor and purchase an SSD to give you a nice increase in performance.

So I could put 8gb ddr2 ram, a 250gb ssd for windows, use the old harddrive and install windows 10 on a Dell vostro 220 pc with no issues fresh install?

@Chrisbaiata

I've upgraded a few 220 to Windows 10. Haven't had any with 8GB but with 2 and 4. I've always done the upgrade on the old HDD then installed fresh on the SSD afterwards. Didn't have any issues.

BTW If you have to purchase memory you'd probably be better off purchasing a refurb. Not worth dumping that much into a 220

Hey thanks for the response.

I found 8gb on Amazon for ddr2 for 15 bucks and a 240gb ssd for 25 thought that was a decent deal. Altho I may search fb marketplace.

I'm more than likely going to system wipe and fresh install windows 10 onto the ssd and use the hdd as a storage drive.

Should have been more clear. Reason I did the upgrade 1st was to get windows 10 free. After upgrading and activating I would then do the wipe and fresh install. Wasn't too sure it would activate without upgrading first.

Is it possible for you to share the end result? Would love to see how this unfolds!
