There are no "higher" versions.  This is a very very very very very very very OLD system.

INTEL changes ram and chipset and sockets and everything else with successive generations of Core I3 I5 I7.

Bios should be updated BEFORE changing CPU and with antivirus software UNINSTALLED.  Doing this the other way round bricks the machine. Dell XPS 8500 / Vostro 470 System BIOS.

YOU CANNOT JUMP From A03 to A14 in a single step.

  • CPU  Intel Core i7-3770K 3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (3rd Gen)
  • Max Turbo Speed 3.5 GHz
  • Number of Cores Quad-Core
  • 64-bit Computing Yes
  • Chipset Type Intel H77 Express
  • Processor Socket  LGA1155 Socket

Each Generation is slightly better.

However they also swap pins around on the sockets to force you to buy new stuff. 4th Gen and up is NEVER an option.  Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell.

2700K is 2nd Gen but its LGA 1155 Intel® HD Graphics 3000

Don't fall victim to the Mhz myth. A few hundered Mhz wont make more than a few percent difference.

Yeah, is an i73770K or i72700K the better choice?

I've read where the 2700K is more solidly built.

The CPU that is already installed and working is the best choice.

So, even after the bios update steps, this unit cannot accept any other CPU than the one it came with? No improvement can be had at all?

@speedstep

My Vostro 470 came with a i7 3770, is it worth replacing it with the K version?

@speedstep this in some regards is

missing information. Needs to be clarified.

the Dell Vostro shares the same American Mega Trends Vbios as the Dell XPS 8500 and the Dell OptiPlex Tower models.

that means XEON PROCESSORS are compatible with the Dell vostro 470.

The top tier XEON sku is the E3-1295-v2 which has a base clock of 3.7 GHz and a max boost clock of 4.1Ghz and comes with intel UHD graphics.. The E3-1290-V2 does not have intel UHD onboard graphics.

The E3-1290-v2 chips is basically the max intel tuning of the intel i7 3770K sku.

tested on the bench while the base frequency and boost seems spectacular because of the next generation  falls .05% shy of a bone stock i7 4790 non K sku.

The only downside to intel 3rd gen was lacking AVX-2 and which was a 128bit compression instruction encoder which is usually for video capture and render and less than 1% of video games on the market currently use that encoder.

While I have moved on to intel 10th gen i7 in my office. The dell vostro 470 with xeon E3-1290 V2 is still the daily driver in the living room when all the kids want to play online gaming. For old tech it still miraculously plays phenomenally well for gaming.

Hi, @PC Parts Bin  Have a couple of questions for you - If you still around

I have a i5 dell vostro 470  The idea of updating the cpu may be worthwhile but am unsure of a few bits

the tdp on the E3-1290 v2 is 87w  the tdp of the stock chips is 77 watt  the E3 -1275 v2 is the same 77 watt - what did you do to make work or in fact is a 77 w  just like others

also why did you decide to use a xeon instead of the i7 chip what advantage did you get ?

did you update the cpu fan ?

My main use will be for media storage and server - prob using a version of tru nas

If the reason for the xeon will be good for me as you

can you let me know any of the steps that i would need to do to get the xeon to work in my system

will then be able to use a 32 gb ecc memory module 1333 that i have instead of 4gb stock

be interested in yr opinions

Paul

If the size 2032 CMOS battery is 5+ years old, change that first.

Then make sure you have the latest BIOS for your 470.  Should already have it due to it's age.

The 470 can take 32GB max RAM, non-ECC.  It can't take ECC RAM, even with a Xeon.  This is a motherboard/chipset limit.

My PC can take either non-ECC or ECC RAM, independent on if it has a Xeon or not.

Not 100% sure what you mean by manual for the MB - schematic?  You might find what you're looking for here:  Vostro 470 Documentation
