vostro 3500 i5 1135g7 can't set resolution 2560x1080(21:9)

Hi,

I bought a new Vostro 3500 laptop with Intel i5 1135g7 and on the connected monitor I can not set the desired resolution of 2560 1080 (21: 9).

Later I replaced this laptop with the same one with GeForce mx330, but the problem remained.
I use the HDMI 1.4 cable that came with the monitor, also I bought a new HDMI v2.1 cable, but it didn't help (((
on an old laptop Vostro 5568 with i5 7200U everything works fine.

I thought it was a problem in the graphics driver and for more than a week i tried to solve this problem with Intel support, but after i provided all the data they asked for, they said it was a problem in the output of HDMI, details here:

I will be grateful for your help!

@user122 I can't be sure if this accounts for the issue, but Inspiron and Vostro models just before the model you have were advertised with HDMI 1.4 ports, like yours is, which should allow up to 2560x1440 60 Hz or 4K 30 Hz -- and yet multiple owners found that they could not run anything above 1920x1080 60 Hz.  Dell eventually responded by publishing a knowledgebase article that acknowledged the issue but claimed that the systems were working "as designed" -- never mind that a 1920x1080 max is an absurd limitation on a system launched in 2019 and many older systems could do better.  And then they scrubbed all references to HDMI 1.4 from the product pages and documentation of the affected systems, I guess to avoid questions of how they could claim this was "as designed" if the system is supposed to support HDMI 1.4.  Here is that knowledgebase article.  I think it's more likely that somebody bungled something in either the design or manufacturing of those systems.

Again, I don't know if this issue affects your system as well, but if you're seeing this behavior with two different cables, it's the only explanation that comes to mind.  I wouldn't be too surprised if Dell simply hasn't updated that article (or, you know, fixed the actual problem so that this lame limitation doesn't persist into future models...)

@user122  Actually, one basic thing I wanted to ask about in case this hadn't been done.  Have you set the external display to Extend rather than Duplicate first?  If you're still set to Duplicate, you won't be able to choose a resolution wouldn't also work on your built-in display.  But if you've already got the external display set to Extend, then I don't have any other immediate ideas.

I tried all options, extend, mirror, single display.

Hi @user122 ,

I faced the same problem with my new Vostro 3400. Have you find a solution for Win10? Or you just bypass this issue using Linux?

Same problem. The maximum resolution on WIN 10 on external HDMI output is 1920x1080!
It turned out to be limited by DELL, but this is not included in the description. :( I hope it will be resolved soon.

I was wondering if anyone has tried to connect a Dell D3100 though the USB 3.0 port, since it provides a resolution up to 3840 X 2160.

Who will be the first one?

@vimezec  That will work, but the D3100 only supports 4K 30 Hz, not 60 Hz.  The newer D6000 can run dual 4K 60 Hz, but the catch with BOTH of those docks is that they both rely on "indirect display" technology called DisplayLink -- not to be confused with DisplayPort.  The way DisplayLink works comes with drawbacks that can be significant in some use cases, which I wrote about in the post marked as the answer in this thread.  So it might be ok for some people, but would not be for others.  Additionally, if you only want to run a display, there are simple USB dongles that use DisplayLink and simply give you a DP or HDMI output, so you don't have to buy an entire docking station for that.

Could you provide further details about how you've managed to solve it? I'm facing the same issue.

Having the same issue with Dell Vostro 3500.

Anyone tryed to use a dockstation or other dongle with DisplayLink over USB 3.0? Care to share the results?

It's really annoying not being able to use ultrawide resolution.

@bruno_agueda

I've faced exactly the same thing and after 4 hours of work, I came across one thing after reading tons of articles that the new version of the graphics card doesn't support 2560x1080 over HDMI 1.4,

So the solution is to use older version 30.0.101.1338 you can download it from this link which worked for my laptop Vostro 15 3510
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=8wpc8&oscode=wt64a&productcode=vostro-15-3510-laptop

Hope this help you
