Can't adjust brightness after installing Windows 10

To access the option "Never install driver software from Windows Update", open the Control Panel by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Control Panel. Navigate to System and Security > System > Advanced system settings. Click the Hardware tab, click Device Installation Settings, and select the “No, let me choose what to do option. Select “Never install driver software from Windows Update.”

Also you can download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter for Windows 10 from Microsoft.

Hi, i got a Dell 15 Série 5000 inspiron and can't adjust brightness after install windows 10 too, but i solved reinstalling drivers for generic monitors pnp in device manager

Brother same is the case with me.I'm also stuck with high brightness if you find a solution pls tell me too

Unbelievable!!! I had same problem on my Dell 7548 after the last driver upgrade on Windows 10. I believe then I have the last and good drivers for my configuration.

My F11 & F12 brightness key was dead. But now after last check I see an update for AMD video card and my brightness key is working again.

Thank you for your suggestion Abdullah, but if the solution was as simple as updating my graphics driver, I would have never have posted on these forums.  The problem is, I have updated my graphics driver, from Dell's website and from MS update and the issue remains.  Dell, may we please get an official response to this issue?  It sounds like many people are having a similar problem.  

I solved this problem by doing this: 

go to Settings>Update&Security Windows Update

type in the Search box :"update device drivers", click on Update device drivers

click on Monitors>Generic PnP Monitor and just click enable

Interesting DROPS76.  I haven' t tried this one yet.  I did a clean install of Windows 10 with UEFI enabled.  Secure boot is disabled, but I think I disabled Legacy boot.  I wonder why that would have an effect on screen brightness.  It wouldn't bother me much if the Fn+F4/F5  shortcut stopped working, as long as I could control the brightness from the action center.  I'll try this method later today and report back.  Thanks again.

Drop76's suggestion worked for me, having tried everything else I could think of.

The only thing I couldn't do was enable legacy boot it said there was no boot device (tries PXE then fails with no boot device found).  

However, just disabling UEFI in the BIOS, for some weird reason, fixed the problem.  It literally all just worked as soon as it had finished booting up.  My driver is 10.18.10.4252.

Like you, I really do wonder why this would affect the problem.

That worked drops76!  Finally, I can control my brightness again.  Thank you.  When I did a clean install of Windows 10 a few months ago, I had disabled Legacy Boot for security reasons.  Once I re-enabled legacy boot and rebooted, my brightness controls work correctly.

So the question is, why does enabling the Legacy Boot option in my BIOS have anything to do with allowing me to control brightness settings?  By enabling Legacy boot options, doesn't that introduce a security risk by allowing someone to boot to a usb or cd live disk?  Will Dell fix this soon so that we can disable legacy boot and still be able to control screen brightness?

And on an unrelated note, while looking around in my BIOS, I noticed that "Intel Rapid Start Technology" is grayed out.  I may have missed a step while reimaging this laptop. Is it possible to enable that feature without reinstalling Windows?   This laptop used to boot to the login screen in about 11 seconds.  I just timed it and it takes 26 seconds.  Does anyone have any instructions on the correct way to configure Intel Rapid Start?  FWIW, I have a 750HDD and a 32GB mSATA SDD for caching.  I have Intel Rapid Storage installed and configured but I guess Rapid Start is a seperate

I had the same problem and it was mind boggling and I was really annoyed.

Checked the AMD drivers couple times but there was no updated, till I checked today...... there was a new drivers and .....hurray......my problem is fixed.

Same problem with my L421x.  Blindingly bright and no way to dim it!

I had the same issue with my alienware 17, I went into device manager, and had to enable the Generic PNP Monitor for the brightness settings to work. Hope that helps.

Solution that's worked for my XPS 15 L521X, Mid 2012: Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. Of course brightnes settings didn't work. All you have to do is to change BIOS setting (reboot, F2) in Boot options:  Secure boot: disable Legacy boot: enable Boot mode: UEFI (should be already set). Reboot. System starts with Windows logo not dell logo, but drivers for HD Graphics 4000 works :) Driver provided by Dell works normally (Fn+F4/F5) and newest driver from Windows Update works but Fn+F4/F5 not (but you can change brighness from Actions Center or Display Settings). Anyway you can switch back to Dell's driver in Device Manager, choose HD Graphics 4000, Driver->Update driver->Search my computer..->let me choose, and select 10.18.10.4242. Windows update won't complain about outdated driver.
