Dell XPS 15 9560 - Windows Update isn't offering 1809

Hi -

I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop, purchased a little over a year ago.

I have the Dell Support Assistant application installed, and I used the support.dell.com website to detect/install my drivers and ensure that they are all up to date (including BIOS and firmware.)

For some reason, when I try to check for "Windows Updates", it is not seeing the 1809 update.  I do not know why, but it is keeping me on 1803. Windows Update is clearly working, in some capacity, because it does install updates to Windows Defender definitions, and it even does install some "Cumulative updates to Windows 1803".

Has anyone else with the XPS 15 9560 been offered the 1809 update yet? Is Microsoft intentionally holding this back for some reason?

My other Dell computer (a XPS 8700 desktop from about 3 years ago) was offered the Windows 1809 update several weeks ago, and it is working fine there.

1809 was stopped for everyone due to a problem with redirected folders and lose of links to those folders. It was available for a small time, so maybe this is the reason why you have it in another system.

However don't rush it, you still don't know how the magical and powerful drivers from Dell will react. Other new systems from different OEMs had problems too with the drivers and the new release.

Older systems = more tested and stable drivers.

1809 has been delayed again because of a new issue discovered with copying files out of ZIP folders using Windows Explorer.  Sometimes the files won't copy out, other times they'll copy out and overwrite any existing files at the destination without prompting, and it seems in some cases the zip file itself will get corrupted.  Definitely don't be in a hurry to update to 1809.  In fact if you're on Windows 10 Pro, you can switch your PC to the "Semi-Annual Channel" rather than the default "Semi-Annual (Targeted) Channel".  Semi-Annual is the new name for what used to be called "Current Branch for Business".  Basically, choosing that option means you're telling your PC not to get new releases of Windows 10 until Microsoft has decided that they are ready to be rolled out to business customers, which historically has been about 3-6 months after the initial public release.  So yes, typical consumers (and everyone on Win10 Home where this option doesn't exist) really are being treated like beta testers now.

Windows 1809 is another example of Microsoft engineers rushing an update out the door. I mean you can imagine how much those guys are getting paid.

On my MSI Aegis 3 Plus desktop, which I boot every day, the Windows 1809 installed when it first came out, but I am having issues with Bluetooth dropping out completely. So I lose my mouse, keyboard, and speakers. Only way to regain them is to manually turn Bluetooth off, then on. This is probably another bug of 1809 except I am too lazy to revert back. So you don't want POS Windows 1809 anyway.

I keep checking Windows Update every day for Microsoft to issue a 1809 cumulative upgrade fix on those like us who have it installed, but nothing so far. At least I was lucky I did not lose any files when it installed.

Microsoft has officially re-released 1809.  However, my XPS 9560 is still not "seeing" it when I try to Check For Updates with Windows Update.  I've also ensured that all my Dell Drivers are up-to-date when running the "Dell Support Assistant" on the Dell support website.

Is 1809 being intentionally withheld longer for some Dell laptops?

antkowiak,

It is re released and the servers are probably working overtime with the updates. I too am awaiting the update on my personal computer. They will get updated soon. The update is not being unintentionally withheld.

I have a 9365 also waiting for the update.  I have downloaded the .iso file but want to wait for Windows update to catch up.

Yesterday, Nov. 15th, I got a cumulative update for 1803 (KB 4023057) which seems to be aimed at getting a system ready for the upgrade.  If you get that update, you might check the description of what it does.

Microsoft said they'd be rolling out this 1809 "re-release" more slowly, so that's probably why some people aren't seeing it even if they're checking Windows Update manually.  If you really want it right away, you can download it manually on the Windows 10 download page here.

Even though I downloaded it manually, the updates during the reboot cycle are failing on my XPS 15 9570

Are you getting any error codes?  Which reboot does it fail on?  Are you checking the box to download updates during the install?

There are logs created during a failed attempt which might give you some insight.  The update for 1803 I mentioned, seems to be setting a system up for compressing files plus a couple things aimed at limited drive space situations.

Do you have iCloud installed on your Windows PC?  I just saw this article.  If not, there may be some other application that is causing the update to be hidden.  Microsoft can and does occasionally prevent updates from showing up based on what applications/versions you have installed if there are known issues with the new release.

On my XPS 15 9570 I couldn't update as well from Win 10 Pro (currently on 1803).

@sharq1, did you download the .iso file and create install media or select the upgrade now button from the Media Creation Tool Site.

The basic problem seems the install cannot find the files it needs to do the install.  Along with that I am seeing a version referencing Developer mode, which I will have to research.

Do you have the latest servicing stack installed, KB4465663?  In order to see it you need to check the view installed update and then look for the Uninstall option.  The update should be listed there.

For now, if you have the servicing stack, I suggest you download the upgrade directly using the .iso option, or create the USB drive directly.  I have something to check on another system which I just upgraded with the download the other day...  Will get back.

Operation failed: Add [1] package C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\DUImageSandbox\Microsoft-OneCore-DeveloperMode-Desktop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab. Error: 0x800F081F[gle=0x000000b7]

Hi @Saltgrass

As you expected, I selected the upgrade now button from the Media Creation Tool Site.

I am not desperate to have the 1809 update installed, I was rather curious if I can get it working easily now.

I think I will just wait until Windows notifies me that the update is ready itself - hopefully that won't be too long.

Thanks

I am still hoping they will release 1809 to Windows Update, even this evening but it is a holiday week...

Someone on the Microsoft site was having the same problem as you.

I've had it running on my XPS 13 9365 ever since it was first released. It ceases up for a couple minutes now and again but otherwise it has been running pretty stable.
