Windows 10 Upgrade taking several days on XPS 13
Hi,
I have bought a new XPS 13 (512 gb, i7) just last week and am now trying to upgrade to windows 10. The installation is taking unnormally long however. The update is already running for 30 hours and is still just at 9 procent.
Does anyone know what to do about this? This is already the second time I try. The first time I stopped the update after 12 hours when it not yet reached 1% and started the update manually with the program of microsoft which forces the update.

Hi,
I think our laptop hardware (512 GB SSD) is not compatible yet to windows 10. I have some problem with you,and I tried 5 times already. in fact, many XPS 13 with same specs have same problems. See this post:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4997/t/19645539
Btw, I already ask dell support in my country, and he suggest that I wait another one or two month if I'm not in hurry to upgrade. Therefore, for me, I will wait for another 2 month before try to upgrade again.
Hope this helps!

Downloading took no more than 10 minutes so I am guessing it must indeed be something else. For instance the 512gb ssd not being supported yet.

Hi jessy.holiday,
Can I know what XPS 13 specs do you have? and you install or download it for 4 hours? If it is install, how do you install it? (via media creation tools or windows 10 icon on the bottom)
Thanks

Hi all!
+1 for the issue, I also have the same configuration, i7 + 512 ssd
I have tried everything, uninstall antivirus, update drivers, reset to out of the box, try to install windows from usb with the creation tool, .... always the same result, and update too too slow, the far I've arrived, 14% total with 48% copying files, after 15 hours!! but getting slower and slower this porcentage turning to 0% of increase in the last 4 hours so I cancelled.
I have tried to contact with Dell support without success, I have read this comments and other and seems like all ones that have buy this laptop are advanced users, so it's not a common easy issue of a beginner user.
I have concluded that it's an issue with 512 ssd configuration of the XPS13 according to all facts:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4997/t/19650854
I would like also if someone knows how to elevate the priority of this issue to Dell, cause seems clear that it's an issue with the 512ssd that have been mounted on the XPS13 laptops build during August, maybe bad configuration? maybe bad ssd drives with issue of the manufacturer?
If they don't solve it, these threads are going to increase day by day as far as XPS13 512ssd laptops are build...
Personally I'm seriously considering return the laptop and give a total refund...

Hi, totally agree with you, it is totally ssd problems.
However, the fact that nobody from dell's support reply in any of those post can be means 2 things:
1. Its the ssd faulty, and probably dell is checking it right now, or
2. Windows 10 not support 512 ssd yet, bcs thus far no ultrabook has 512 ssd beside our xps 13 tho as far as I know
What do you guys think?

Hi Leo,
I think that the problem is drivers or configuration, cause I have stablished contact with other people with same laptop, i7 ssd 512, except the ssd was brand samsung and ours seems to be SK Hynix, so I think this is the problem...
Anybody have tried something?
Dell, are you there?

I am having exactly the same problem, and I think it is a real shame that Dell are not responding to this issue. I have an i7 512GB system like everyone else here. The drive is SK Hynix.

I am having exactly the same problem with an i7 512 SSD system, like everyone else in the thread. Has anyone found a solution yet? I've emailed Dell to see what they say...

Hi guys! From what I see the only solution for us is to do clean installation. However, by doing so, we don't have the product key. For me, I already explain thia issues to dell support and even show them this forum, and ask them for product key for win 10. They said that they will follow up my request through email.
Hence, it would be best if you guys also contact your local dell support , and ask them for product key, because this is flaw within their products, and the product key is just the services we need. Hopefully if many of us ask for product key Dell will address this issue and give us the win 10 product key.
Best of luck!

Hi, I didn't have as much luck of astroguy, and my local microsoft team (spain) didn't want to tell me a valid win 10 key by saying that the right proccess it's the upgrade and not a clean install.
So I asked him for support, and during 5 hours at the phone he did exactly the same actions said at this thread like update all drivers, try media device via update way.... All without success
So he concluded to elevate this incident to the peple in charge of licenses, that I hope today they'll phone me with a key.... Cause I have no solution from Dell
I have also make a link in
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19637588/20818479#20818479
cause there it is a dell support member of XPS 13, if he could see this....

I run into the same problem. I bought my xps 13 512Gb SSD (XPS 9343) 3 days ago (8 Sep 2015). First of all the speaker was not working. Some dell staff came the next day and replaced new speaker for my laptop. It worked.
Went home and tried to upgrade to windows 10. Experienced the same issues as everyone described here. Read this thread - tried to use magical jelly bean key finder (free tool) to obtain windows product key and then use media creation tool make a bootable USB for clean Windows 10 installation. Somehow the key is not recognized and this method also fails.
Called Hong Kong local dell support - They are unaware of the issue (there's even not a message from their Dell headquarters notifying them of this issue which is an absolute surprise to me). They just repeated everything which I have already done. Laptop seems to behave all normal, only just stalled when upgrade windows 10. I have got a couple of other machiens which I never have same problems of upgrading to windows 10.
I am sure people who bought this model must be tech savvy and we all see the same issues. It is absolutely surprising to see Dell support seems to be unaware of any issues like this and provide absolutely no clues to the solutions of the problem. To be fair, support staff was trying to be helpful but seems that there is no solution to the problem and no one can help.
I DO NOT expect I need to deal with so many issues and unknowns on buying a supposing high-end laptop. First of all the speaker not working on Day 1 is already a proof of their sloppy QA. Now this windows 10 upgrade problem without official solution from Dell is really sub-standard to a company of that scale.
DELL NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE INTO HIGH PRIORITY AND PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR USERS ASAP. This is really making their name very bad and my frustration is starting to lead my motivation to vent this frustration to all computer forums very soon.
Meanwhile any users (or HK users) of same XPS 13 model (i7 512Gb SSD) got idea how to resolve this windows 10 upgrade problem kindly please share your experience! thanks a ton!

I have been in touch with Dell about this for some weeks. They rung me this morning to say that they anticipate the problem to be resolved through an upgrade coming this Wednesday.
The issue is a conflict with the 512gb SSD drive specifically. I will post again when I hear anything more.

Guys to anyone that have this issue pls refer to post below and PM your service tag to Colin from Dell representative as he will organize our SSD replacement (SK Hynix to Samsung). Mine will be replaced tomorrow and hopefully the issues will be gone. Good luck guys!
