Apparent Conflict Between Internal HDD and M.2 SSD Prevents Either From Booting After Windows Cloned To SSD.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3891 desktop system which came with Win 10 pre-installed on an internally mounted 1TB WD HDD. The motherboard also has a slot for an M.2 NVMe SSD. I just installed a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB SSD in that slot (brand new, out of the box and no data on it). I went ahead and cloned my Windows system and data to the Samsung drive using the Samsung software which came with the drive ("Samsung Data Migration Tool"). All I had to do was specify the "To" drive and the "From" drive and the program took care of the rest.
The cloning went smoothly but when I moved the SSD to the top of the BIOS boot sequence and tried booting the system, I got a blue screen message saying that the computer needed to be repaired and gave the error message "inaccessible boot drive", "0XC0000001". I tried manipulating the boot sequence many different ways, including changing drive positions on the list, removing the HDD drive from the list completely and also by turning secure boot off.
Nothing made the problem change. It was clear that booting couldn’t occur from either drive, regardless of what I specified in the BIOS. Finally, I physically disconnected the HDD from the system and this time the SSD Windows booted up and ran fine. When I reconnected the HDD, neither drive would boot once more.
I'm not sure what to do next. I would like to keep the HDD running concurrently with the SSD for routine data storage and it's my understanding that I should be able to do that. I don't know how to make that happen at this point as long as having two bootable drives installed is going to confuse the system, regardless of what the BIOS is set to. I really don't need the HDD to remain bootable. I just plan to use it for routine programs and data.
A number of other points of information are that there is no legacy boot capability on this system since it is brand new. It is UEFI only. Also, both drives are GPT format. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get this HDD running again? Thanks in advance for any help.
