HERE is the Dell installation instructions. This may help.

(The detailed list of your computer is not needed for help, such as this - just the Model number would have been all that was needed).

The XP Cd I have tried was provided with dell inspiron 1420. It has sata driver. After I insert  the cd it copies files required for installation. Then it is trying to start windows installation then it shows blue screen with memory dump.

I have the drivers for 1420 for Xp. I think that should work with 1440 also.

Not sure why vista will not install, but as for XP since there are not XP drivers listed and you need to have the SATA drivers slip-streamed into the install disk you and there are no other XP drivers listed on the Drives and download page you will have to find all the XP drivers if there are any.

I have run into the same problem myself, except I haven't attempted to install Windows XP 32 Bit yet. The reason behind this is because from what I have found out so far, there aren't any 32 Bit drivers available for a 32 bit version of Windows XP that will work with the hardware that comes equipped with a Dell 1440

You should have really started a new thread as this one is 10 months old. Go HERE and see if the drivers listed work they claim to
