DON'T USE NORTON LIVE UPDATE!

Hello-The Norton Live Update is NOT WORKING.  I had to uninstall both Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks. If your Norton AntiVirus is displaying the screen in the post below, your Norton AntiVirus Program is corrupted. You do not have virus protection, no matter what the graphics say. After uninstalling Norton AntiVirus, I installed avast!Home antivirus software(it's free) so I can get back online to figure out what to do.

That's because you yankees use month/day/year; we Brits use day/month year. Sorry that I forgot that.

We also drive on the left hand side of the road...

Bashaner,

Have you unchecked the Office plug in in Norton AV? It's under options, miscellaneous. If checked it scans for virus everytime Word is opened, which can take an age. I see no popint in having this on, since all the files I open with Word are from my hard drive, or are scanned on download.

I hope that solves your problem with Word.

Hello

Thanks again JRosenfeld, I don't see the point in having the scan everytime either.

I am experiencing yet another problem, hopefully someone can help me.  I installed NIS 2003 for my parents today and the same thing happened with McAfee when they used to use that - the main screen opens, but then it quickly disappers.  Sometimes it won't open at all.  Then after it disappears I can't move my cursor down to the start button, or anywhere near the bottom of the screen (it's like there's an imaginary line there.)  Once it finally did open (after restarting a few times), I selected to download auto updates, and it said it could not connect or something.  Then, the screen disappeared again.  I tried to uninstall it, but it told me someone with a supervisor account must be logged in to uninstall.  Well, I can't get into the program at all, to even check the settings.  I know this sounds very strange.  They also have a Dell computer, but it's a desktop...

thanks!

Sorry I did not add this before.  The software looks different on the screen than mine also, but I use the same program.  Could it be because I installed OEM software on their computer?  I noticed in the few seconds the screen stayed open, that there was a login section, and a rescue button (both of which I don't have).

thanks!

Hello again,

It seems that installing NIS has also somehow made it preventable to connect to the internet.  I had no choice other than to uninstall NIS and NAV using the removal tool on Symantec's website.  I know I installed the program correctly, and I did everything else correctly, so I have no idea what happened here.  Any input would be appreciated, thanks!!!

very frustrated

bashaner,  After installing Norton's firewall, you need to open the program and configure it (automatically) for those programs that you wish the firewall to allow. This includes IE 6, of course.  After doing this, you will be able to get access to the internet.  Good luck

Paindoc

Yeah I tried, but the program wouldn't stay open long enough to do that.  The screen would open and then quickly disappear, literally a second later.

thanks

Yes, I did that.  Did you see my previous posts about the program being unstable on the computer it was on?  I already uninstalled it, because I tried everything else - nothing worked.

thanks for your input!

bashaner, I assume that NAV is runnig without a problem.  You may consider using ZoneAlarm's free version until NIS gets repaired.

Same problem here!  January 7 - live update ran.  Live update has not run since.  I can manually run it and it tells me everything is up to date and it is not.  I went to Symantec site and ran the intelligent update and it did install fine.  Their upgrade messed up their update lol.  Anyone got a fix for this problem?  I did what they said, but won't be able to truely test it until Wednesday when another live update comes out.

After reading these posts I checked my Norton.   It doesn't open.   I have also been having other problems, such as Adobe not opening and some other things that I never had trouble with before.   Do you think this could be my problem?  If so, what is the final word on how to fix it?

I had a slightly different problem with NAV 2002. It suddenly was unable to do a complete system scan. Nortons advice was to reinstall. I tried that twice. Program worked until I did an update. Norton's online support is near useless. Runs you in circles without any real answers. Road Runner was giving EZ Armor to customers free, so, that's what I have now. I liked Norton until they "fixed" it.

There are a lot of freee programs out there. Most are as good as retail ones. I have AVG on my other machine along with Zone Alarm. (also free) I had problems with McAfee a few years ago and from what I've heard from others, they haven't improved much. At least if a free program tanks, you're not out the retail price and subscription fees. I'm sure a web search will give you a lot of possibilities.

so what would you recomend if a person decided not to use Norton. I have had problems in the past with Norton and had to uninstall on my other pc. McAfee came with this new Dell Dimension and i need to make a decision about which software to go with. thanks
