Dell Support Center 2.0 download Icon
Hi, I need some help. I have the DSC 2.0 install icon in my system tray, but after reading all the horror stories from people that have installed it I realize that I do NOT want to download it. I get the reminder from Dell every other day to install it. How do I remove this download icon? If I go to "Add & Remove progarams" and remove the original Dell Support Center will it also remove this update icon? I guess that I could just ignore the icon and the reminders but I'm afraid that at some point someone may accidently click the icon and download 2.0. Thanks for your help.

Dell seems intent on not letting you control what's on your computer. And I thought AOL was bad.
Last time I tried it as an experiment for another poster I just let it download, and then went back into add/remove and uninstalled the whole lot (both old and new). But I think I'm going to try again and see if there isn't a manual way to take care of it.
My first thought would be to see if you can right-click the old Support Center icon (the orange E), then use the settings to stop it from running in the tray at startup.

I'm not sure if it would or not. The thing is, I downloaded and reinstalled the old 3.4 again to try and duplicate it, but now I don't get the icon anymore so I can't play with it. As I recall, the 2.0 nag icon came up when you selected the "download later" option - but now, all I see is a "get it" option that only goes to the download page, just like it used to. Which makes me wonder if Dell's "fixed" it. Wish I hadn't been so impatient when I did see it a couple of days ago.
What you can do (if you're comfortable with it) is see if you can identify it in your startup.
Start -> Run -> type msconfig
Go to the startup tab
Look for items that originate in one of the Dell folders by looking in the Command column - sprtcmd and dsagnt are the 2 that run the Dell Support Center when the PC starts up. See if you can find a 3rd one and uncheck it in the startup list. XP will nag you and warn that you're doing a selective startup - just click "don't show again" .
And if it makes you feel any better, I've downloaded and uninstalled the thing about 4 times now with no problem. Though if you've got dialup, I can see why it wouldn't be much fun.

Alexandra, you're pretty darn smart! It never occurred to me to do a System Restore.
I did a restore back to january 2, and sure enough the download icon was gone. I then went into Add/Remove programs and deleted the original Support Center. No more download icon.
Thanks for all your help!
