I am aware of that, but the architecture is called by Intel IA32e not X64. X64 is actually AMD's 64 bit processor. See this Microsoft link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx about available of 64 bit processing. Ps Intel IA64 is th Itaniun processor
I wasn't talking about the architecture of the cpu but the version of XP
I was trying to install. It is called 'Windows XP Professional X64 Edition'
as stated on the front page of the link you posted. Hence the 'X64'.
Now on to the issue.... any idea when dell is going to post drivers for
this OS?
This is what exists "Prerelease: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition - Build 1218 - (English)" and this is what is is for
"This 64-bit version of Windows supports AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon 64, Intel Xeon with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T), and Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T processors."
BOth of these quotes we taken today directly from Microsoft
I am now confused, according to the link I posted it does not exist yet. According to MSDN, a password protected Microsoft download site, the only 64 bit version of Windows, sometimes call X64, is for the Itanium processor, the version for your processor IA64/IA32E is still in Beta testing.

My precision 370 contains a P4 with EMT64 support, ie, support for 64bit OS's.

Correct and my workstation has a P4 with Intel EM64T which is fully supported on that
build (actually they just released build 1260). So the cpu is supported but the disk does
not have drivers for the SATA controller and thus cant see any hard drive. Dell advertises
this machine as it will support XP x64 when it's released but I was wondering if they were
going to post some beta drivers prior to it's release.
Thanks
