Denny I tried the reinstalling windows Xp still having problems

Hi Denny
I clicked start and when the Dell logo came up i pressed down the crtl key and then pressed F11 and then left go at the same time, a black screen came up but no where was there a plzce to click restore and after a few seconds my setting came back on and i tried this 3 times. I then proceeded to put the marroon cd rom in and when it came up i clicked reinstall windows xp and a window came up stating it couldn't reinstall cause i have a newer version of windows xp than what is on the cdrom. I tried dell again and again they refused to help me unless i wanted to pay 239.00 for there one service program. The problem i am having is this. I was having problems with pop ups and i never had problems with them before I called aol and they had me go to there download center and go to lavasoft and download the adware. In the mean time i alos discoved that some how my one popup blocker was turned off, i turned it back on and the pop up problem has been resolved. I down loaded the adware that aol sent me to and after it downloaded i clicked for it to install and got this message ( could not initialize the installation file size expected 2855080 size returned is 816556). I called aol and they told me to unstall it and try again the problem is i can't unistall it cause it was never installed they said it sounds like only part of it is downloaded. I want to get it out of my puter but can't seem to figure out how or how to find out if it is in my computer and if so how much of it is in. The other problem I am having and it all started when i downloaded that adware is I have IE and firefox. Ever since i downloaded the adware i get a lot of from IE the page can't be displayed and from firefox i usually get the server has been reset when i try to refresh the page. It tells me to check my connections and or to make sure if I have a fire wall to make sure that firefox is not being blocked by my fire wall or a proxy. I have McAfee brought to you by aol i have spydoctor and  i have Microsoft anitspyware. I go into pogo a lot and i use one of the browsers to do so and never had these problems before since this all started it is either loading the games or if i have more than one window open and go to click on a different window the first one i had open freezes up and the page goes clear and the only thing u can see is the outline of the page, when i click the red X to close the page it won't close and if i right click the window tab at the bottom on the tool bar then click close it still won't close i have to turn my computer off competely to get the pages to close. I am at my whits end I am unemployed and trying to use these browsers in job searches and they are freezing and or not opening. Do you have any ideas on why my reinstall didnt' work or any ideas at all how to fix this problem with my browsers???????????????
Sorry this is so long but i have been at this now for a week and most of all since noon today and it is now 10;00 pm.

Thank You
Melissa

Mocnvw23,

"Do you have any ideas on why my reinstall didnt' work?"

Yes, because you did not boot from the Windows XP CD but rather let it autostart from within Windows. Windows is perfectly happy to let you do that and also indicate that an installation is taking place, but it is not. It is critical that you boot from the CD, delete the existing boot partition (the largest of the three partitions on your hard disk), recreate it, then format it.

Once Windows is reinstalled followed by your system's drivers your browser problems should be resolved.

Melissa,

I hope you have solved your problem by now.  Denny may be away for some reason.  If you have not fixed your problem as advised by Denny, you may have to configure your BIOS to enable your system to boot to the cd drive.  I have an older system and had to do that.  The way I did it was to hit the delete key when booting up and then enter the BIOS setup.  There I set the CD ROM as the first boot device and saved the change and exited setup.

I then put the CD in the drive and booted to that.   The rest was easy.

Good luck,
