Dimension 8400 do I HAVE TOO many services / processs running?
please can someone advise me which are the essential services that should run in xp.
I if I look in task manager I have 48 processes running , is this slowing down my machine?

Look at this site for recommendation on running processes. I strongly advise you to only make one or two changes at a time, run the PC for a day, if all okay, go back and make two more. Write down the changes you make to make it easier to find them. Do not make a change your not sure of. Make a restore point prior to making the changes. Kip

1. Leave them alone, unless you really know what they are doing
2. You are missing the point of the task manager, It tells you more than what is running. I have forty-five proceses in the task list. Of those, fifteen haved not used any measureable time in the past two days, only seventeen have used a minute or more. Included in the fifteen are the "system Idle process" which used 288 hours, my virus scanner which runs each night and two process that run instead of a screen save, simular to SETI at home.
