Emergency Boot Disk
Hello all,
Having used 98, 98SE,ME in the past I now find myself using XP Home SP1a and now have to familiar myself with its use.
I was wondering what options I had in case my system would not boot. I understand in XP you can boot off the XP cd to reformat. I also understand that there is no DOS in XP.
Is there an emergency floppy that can be made in order to possibly repair the computer other than reformatting it off the XP cd? If so what and where do I make this.
Thanks.........................

Hi,
What you have said is true.
One option is to repair the OS. Doing this will return the system to an "out of the box" state, so you will get to keep all your apps but will lose SP1 (unless it is on the installation CD) and ALL Windows Updates.

You can also make a set of boot floppies. 6 formatted floppies are needed for this
Choose 98SE from the first list

One issue with using Win9x/Me boot diskettes. That will get you to DOS, but your hard drive is formatted with NTFS and DOS (e.g. the Win98 boot disks) will not recognize an NTFS formatted hard drive, only a FAT format. So using disk tools from older DOS systems won't work, you have to have something that will recognize NTFS.
Although this sound "harsh", basically forget what you learned or did in the old DOS world, with XP.

You can download the data to create a set of setup boot floppies for Windows XP from the links here. They provide access to the CD-ROM drive for systems that do not offer the capability of booting from the CD-ROM. However, since all Dell systems can boot from the CD-ROM drive they are of limited usefulness. If your Dell will not boot from the CD-ROM drive the drive itself has failed and the capability of accessing it will accomplish nothing.
The boot floppy set has some utility for Dell systems only when the user is unable to access Recovery Console because the Administator password has been reset from null by sysprep. See this and to avoid that problem see this.

fireberd,
I'm starting to realize that.
Now Longhorn is coming with 3D and a few other bits of things. When it gets here is anyones guess. Now it's been pushed up to 2007.

There's no DOS per se but there are Recovery Console DOS-like commands you can run (also by booting to the cd) that can get you back running. You *can* install the Advanced Menu which is a nice shortcut that allows you some troubleshooting.
Dunedin, I believe that "Out-of-the-box state" may be an overstatement.
