How to add icon in toolbar tray to launch an application?

Right click the Tasbar and make sure lock the Taskbar is unchecked. Go to Start/Programs and right click on the Program Icon for Creative Mixer and choose send to Desktop create shortcut.
Drag the shortcut to your Taskbar where your Quick Launch program shortcuts are located.

Two more questions:

Is it possible to have the icon in the main taskbar?  Enabling the "quicklaunch" option opens a second taskbar way on the bottom left of my screen.  I guess I don't understand the difference between what icons in the tasbar do vs. what they do in the quicklaunch taskbar.  They seem to do the same thing, ie start their respective programs.

Also, before I read your reply, I simply dragged the mixer icon from Start/Programs/Creative Lab/ into the quick launch taskbar.  This made it completely disappear (I should have expected this) from the Start/Programs/Creative Lab/ menu.  Then, I couldn't figure out how to put it back there!  I was not able to drag it back.  Finally, I resorted to the Windows Restore option which put everything back the way it was before I started playing with it.  Does anyone know how I could have put it back without going to the Restore route?

On my PC, with Audigy2 OEM, the short cut is to the file Surmixer.exe, in Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program files\creative\Audigy2\Surround mixer, it will be in there. Alternatively, if you have other creative sound card, look for a similar location and file name. Right click on it, drag it to, say the desktop and create a shortcut. Double click on the shortcut to check that it works and opens the mixer you want.

Then you can move that shortcut back into the Creative programs folder or to the quicklaunch bar, or anywhere else you fancy.

ahhhh..

now I'm starting to understand.  I didn't realize the system tray was ONLY for programs that launch at startup.  That explains why I couldn't add just anything to the system tray.  Do you have any ideas as to how I could have fixed the problem described in my second question above without having to resort to Restore?

The main part of the taskbar is for minimised windows. The system tray is for things that start on bootup. The quick launch bar is for shortcuts to applications. You can also add other bars (e.g. I have a language bar) or create new ones with shortcuts.

My quicklaunch taskbar is next to the start button, in line with the main task bar (single height). You can move the bars around by putting your mouse on the grey vertical line on the left of the bar, depress and hold left mouse button when the cursor changes to double arrow and dragging to right or left. It's a bit fiddly, but it does work.
