You may install Windows 7 pro and Dell Media Direct from an external optical drive, if you have the disks. However Dell has not tested the system with Windows 7, so the compatible drivers are not available.

As you have already mentioned you may try installing the drivers compatible with Win 7 x64 from the manufacturer’s website. You may check for the manufactures of hardware components by following the steps below:

• Click ‘Start’
• Click ‘Run’
• Type ‘msinfo’
• Click ‘Components’ on left side and check all the hardware components.

You may also download Windows Vista x64 from Dell support website and install them in compatibility mode.

You may install the standalone graphics card driver from Nvidia website and then you can install ageia physx cpu version 8.09.04 from the link: http://bit.ly/ZhxPQj

Only two things: To install dell media direct with an external usb cd/dvd drive which boot option have I to select from the bios?

The 3.5 version (the one I have) will work perfectly on windows 7 64 bit? Also the ir remote control with the infrared port, or I have to search some drivers for use it?

An then, the on-screen indicators about volume, screen brightness and other things (and obviously the function of the volume buttons in the lower part of the notebook) are all managed with QuickSet software, including the light control?

Which version have I to install? Because I have read that starting from 9.2.13 version Dell quickSet runs as a Local Machine Process - no longer a startup item, differently from 8.2.14 I have installed now. What is the difference?

Hi, I've another question. My internal cd/dvd drive is broken, I have an external usb dvd drive but I can't boot from that because in my bios I have only usb storage, which is not for external drives...how can I do?

I know that I can make a bootable usb using a microsoft tool for qindows 7 but how can I do with Dell Media direct?

First can you tell me what processor the system has? If you don't know run the Intel processor Identification Utility. I would imagine everything on this system to be 64 bit but its best to check the processor.

Second its best to just replace your optical drive its not so hard (1 screw and slot in and out) and relatively cheap. The part can easily be found on the likes of eBay:

Having Media Direct without an optical drive is kinda pointless anyway.

Next regarding Windows 7 64 bit. I have an untested driver set which will likely work listed here:

Its very likely to work as I have helped with installation of Windows 7 32 and 64 bit on similar models but if you test it out I would still like feedback.

My Cpu is Intel core 2 Duo T8300. When the optical drive broke I tried to unscrew the screw but it was large and the screwdriver turned empty. I tried many methods to unscrew it but there was no way...so I have bought an external usb dvd drive. That screw really shouldn't be difficult to remove, I've done it several times on similar models.

I tried to in the past with similar looking software and I didn't get very far. The Media Direct DVD is different to the Windows DVD. You can try of course.

It may be possible to clone your Media Direct and Diagnostics Partition using  a program such as Acronis. My tests for doing so on the diagnostics partition so far haven't been successful otherwise it would be incorporated as part of the guide.

Note you may get away without booting from the Media Direct DVD as the partitions are probably still present on your drive. Just as long as you don't wipe the system with DBAN or disrupt the Media Direct or Diagnostics partition during the Windows setup. Install Windows on the main C: partition.

You should be able to when you boot from the disc, install Windows 7 on the largest partition only and don't touch any of the other partitions.

I'm not sure about the Intel Turbo Memory Software, you can try installing the Vista 64 bit driver for it or alternatively there might be something on the Intel Download Centre.

The Chipset I listed should also be the Intel Update Utility, hopefully it will also give you something for the Intel Turbo Memory.

Install the driver I listed as there's problems installing the Vista Bluetooth Driver on 7.

Ok, I'm not sure that in my system there's a turbo memory card installed, so can I install only Matrix storage and then with my internet connection try the Intel update utility? If it will detects a turbo memory card installed it will propose me to install a driver, right?

I've the A05 Bios and the option USB device is not there. I've only USB storage but it doesn't work, maybe only with an usb media like an hard disk or an usb key, I have to try (even because I've to install windows 7 by  usb key).

For Dell Media Direct...but the correct sequance is to boot from Dell media direct cd, then install windows 7 and then install dell media direct in windows 7? And the first thing is to build Dell partitions? And if I've never touched them it is necessary to boot from media direct cd? Let me know because it's important...thanks

Thank you for the information. To boot from external USB DVD drive, please follow the steps below:

• Power on the system and tap 3-4 times at Dell logo.
• Choose the option USB device from the list.

As far as Dell media direct is concerned, you may install it after installing Windows 7. However, it is recommended to install media direct before installing operating system. The physical button on system for media direct works only if you will install it before installing Windows. Media direct will work just in operating system if it's installed after installing Windows.
