Inspiron 1501 Windows Vista Home Basic and HP DVD740e External DVD Burner

Has anyone had this problem and found a resolution? I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Windows Vista (which I can't stand), but when I try to connect my external dvd burner to it Windows Vista recognizes that something has been plugged into the USB port, but then immediately pops up a message stating "Unknown Device". When the unknown device message comes up, I've gone into the device manager, into the drivers settings and tried to have Windows Vista search for the driver and nothing comes up. I've also gone to the HP site... which only has drivers for 2000 and XP. Has anyone else had similar problems?

try this, download the XP drivers then,

This XP compatibility install may work, no guarantee of this.

Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista that are for XP

Right click on this setup.exe file and select the compatibility Tab
Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and tick the "run as admin" box if available, then select XP in the drop down box, hit OK
Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go well and install the drivers you need, Good luck.

I appreciate the suggestion.... but no dice. The driver update doesn't even recognize the drive... its sad.
