Internet Explorer re-instalation on XP home Edition
Hi,
I have a laptop Inspiron 7000 Pentium II which has Windows XP home edition. Windows works perfect. I installed (via online) the internet explorer from the Microsoft update webpage, but it was not working properly. After that, I decided to Delete the internet explorer, but it was not listed in the installed software listing (I checked in Add Remove Programs). Logically, I concluded that the program was not correctly installed via internet. Since I had no other choice (at least at my current tech-knowledge level), I deleted ALL the files associated with the Internet explorer 6.0.
After that, I have been trying to make a clean installation of the Explorer 6.0 sp1 and the Outlook Express via internet and (in additon, I bought the Microsoft CD containing the same Internet 6.0 & Outlook Express). Before the installation begins, the installation wizard shows the following message: "THE SYSTEM HAS DETECTED YOU HAVE ALREADY AN UPDATED VERSION OF THIS SOFTWARE. IT WILL NOT CONTINUE WITH THE INSTALATION". I tryied to install it via CD ROM and it shows the same message. Seems that I have not been able to eliminate all the associated files....
How can I make a clean installation without receiving the mentioned message?
Thanks in advance!
Mx

Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows XP. The easiest solution is to replace the files that are now missing which you can do by going to Start|Run, typing sfc /scannow and clicking OK. (There is a space before the "/".) You will be prompted to insert the Windows XP Reinstallation CD.
Second alternative is to reinstall IE using the procedure here.
Third alternative, if these fail (and they shouldn't) is to do a repair reinstall of Windows using the procedure here. This will not affect your data or applications but will remove all the Windows Critical Updates you have installed, so you will have to download and install them again.

You made a serious mistake when you deleted the files. Deleting the files does not remove the entries in the Windows Registry. You still may be able to recover if you go to Add/Remove programs and look for Microsoft Internet Explorer, and try to remove the program again.

Steve, thanks for your email.
Yes I have searched for the Microsoft Internet Explorer within the add/remove programs and it is not listed. I know I made a great mistake, but the Internet Explorer WAS NOT listed in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM wizard.
Waht can I do? I know that my last resource would be reinstall Windows XP, but seems that there must be a file showing that I have the "latest version" even if it is not installed.....any suggestion?
thanks again,

Denny, thanks for your help. at least I have used the second suggestion to reinstall the internet explorer 6.0, and it is working, BUT.... I tried to use the OUTLOOK EXPRESS and it does not appears to be installed.
< PROGRAMS; then in C:---> PROGRAM FILES---> OUTLOOK EXPRESS and I tried to execute the only 2 files that seemed to be executables within the Outlook Express Folders (msimn ; setup50). When executed the file msimn, I recieved the following message:
Outlook express could not be started because it cannot open the message store.
then: MSOE.DLL cannot e initialized. Outlook E. may not be properly installed.
Where can I find the OUTLOOK EXPRESS if I have already installed the Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 and it was installed correctly? Do I have to execute a file?
thanks again!

Follow Method 2 here for reinstalling Outlook Express only (step 3).
