Is it possible to lock a file or folder with a password?

Steve Bass at PCWorld recently recommended a free utility to set up secure folders so you may want to search the pcworld.com site.

If these are Microsoft office files (word, excel, powerpoint) you can set a password for each file. For example, in Word, click File>Save As. Then click Tools on toolbar in window that opens and select Security Options. You can set password so others can either open but not change a file, or cannot open the file without the password. But if you forget your own password... ;)

You can also set up your screen saver with a password so no one can access your PC while you're away from it once the screen saver kicks in.

yes you can lock the file from dos i don't remeber how but you can do this i only remeber the lock method but don't remeber the open method ..method is just approch the folder which you wana lock the hold ALT butoon and press 200 then enter the lock code it will lock the folder u will not able to see it in window when you unlock the folder then you able to see it but i don't know how to unlock it

If you don't mind zipping the file (compressing it) you can set a password so no-one can open it without a password.

Thanks for that info. Now how do I do that? If I wanted to lock a folder, how do I compress it and set a password?

Right-click, and send file to compressed (zipped) folder.

Double click on the zipped folder. You should see the contents,

Go to file--add a password

Enter password, then confirm.

Done.

But if you forget your password, you are in trouble.
