Is there free download to replace MS Word

Question

My trial period of Office 2003 ended and I have left an anemic text program. If there a free program that is out there that would take the place of Office 2003.

Try Open office www.openoffice.org hope you have high speed, it is a big er but it is free....nothing like office 2007 but it is like older office versions and not $200-$500.

Open Office is a great product. many save as options. also if you want a smaller download, and only a word processor with many save as options, take a look at AbiWord. http://www.abisource.com/download/ or maybe Abiword portable at http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable

I began using OPenOffice about a  month ago, and am very impressed with what it can do, especially that it is compatible with Word, so you can transfer files to those with Word without a problem. Saving files as a PDF is also a nice feature.

It says it is, I have to admit I don't use it, I have Office pro 2007 BUT I have downloaded & used it in a pinch when I was in the field for a week with a work laptop the it guy forgot to load office in & I had a project due....It seemed to work just fine including the transition back to office when I returned to the office.   Here is the system requirements from their site: Microsoft Windows Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista (enhanced Vista integration from version 2.2) 128 Mbytes RAM At least 800 Mbytes available disk space for a default install (including a JRE) via download. After installation and deletion of temporary installation files, OpenOffice.org will use approximately 440 Mbytes disk space. 800 x 600 or higher resolution with at least 256 colour

Anything you work up in OpenOffice 2.2.1 writer can be saved as:

Star writer 3,4, and 5
Text (.txt)

Pocket Word (.psw)

You can also export anything written in OpenOffice writer in .pdf format with password security.

You can save your sideshows in Power point format also if you want to.

I personally believe that .odf which has always been xml, is superior to Microsoft's new OOXML.
OpenOffice .odf is an approved ISO standard. Microsoft OOXML is not as yet. Many countries are rejecting it now but I am sure the power of MS will ultimately push it through as an accepted standard. If this happens, OpenOffice will just add a filter to include it as another “save as” option.
