Just replaced my Vostro 1520 hard disk (32bit) drive....

You should know, I finally broke down and replaced the hard drive because the dreaded Blue Screen of Death was coming more and more frequently (1-2 times each month) and I got tired of finding band aids to fix it. Hopefully replacing the old Seagate hard drive with a Toshiba hard drive will make those problems go away!???! Using Windows 7 fyi.

...at this point, I have just 2 problems.

1. My touchpad no longer works. I've tried downloading a driver from the Dell site but it seems to fail during the install process. Help!

2. I want to reinstall the Microsoft Works program that came factory installed, but in looking through the CDs that came with my system 4 years ago, there were no Microsoft CDs sent to me. Am I able to get a copy of MS Works for my 4-year old Vostro without $$$?

Any help appreciated.

Hi judyh2000,

As correctly mentioned by ejn63, the drivers are needed to be installed in correct order. Please refer to the link http://dell.to/12oPjsc for checking the correct order to install drivers after installing Windows.

To get the drivers for your system, click on the link http://dell.to/18NmI2D. Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system. Install the drivers in the order shared in the above link. Also, please update the BIOS.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

If the issue still persist, please follow the troubleshooting steps listed on the link http://dell.to/YasJlx. The Micosoft Works was shipped pre-installed along with the system. It would not be possible to ship the CDs for it.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

In order for the touchpad driver to load, you must have the chipset driver and Dell notebook system software installed.

Microsoft no longer sells or supports Works - you're likely out of luck there.

Thanks Dell, Paul and EJN, you were all very helpful today! So far I've downloaded the MS Office starter - thank you so much Paul. Next I'm off to download the drivers "in the correct order" this time.  :-)

Thank you Saharsh - you'll soon see I'm no techie! I downloaded all the updates my system needs from the Dell driver-download website per your instructions. I then followed your article regarding the order to install them. FYI, it's a little confusing for me because there isn't a direct relationship between the driver or application name on the list and the downloaded list that was created on the driver download page... but I did my best.

I encountered a problem on installing #1, the Dell system software R888017. The error said my system is running Windows Vista and this driver (which the Dell driver download site listed for me) is for XP - go get the Vista driver... so the install failed. I'm not running Vista, I'm running Windows 7 and the XP driver is supposed to work. The installer said to run installer again after a failure so I tried another couple of times but got the same message.

I haven't gone any further figuring you've got to successfully install each item in order or the rest won't install properly...

Also, in re-reading your earlier email to me you mentioned updating the BIOS... oops, I'm not sure what that means/how to do it. Should I begin by doing that??

Hi judyh2000,

Please follow the below steps:

  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/18NmI2D
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system. Make sure that you have selected Windows 7 there.
  • Now you may refer to the chart shared on the correct order of driver installation link and install drivers. Skip the one that you don't find.
  • Once all the drivers are installed check Device Manager and let me know if you see any yellow bang there.

Please reply if you have any questions.
