Microsoft Office 2000 Premium on Vista

Hi I am new to Vista running on a new Inspiron 6400 my question is can I run my old copy of MS Office 2000 on Vista and if so can I just load it from CD, or do I have to change any settings.

I had to make the expensive purchase of Office 2007 today, and wished I did not have to, but on the bright side, it works, its slightly better with a newer look, and should last for a good 5 years....  Maybe  :smileytongue:

I could install Microsofts 2002 Works Suite with some small install issues, but not too bad if interested to know

Office 2000 Premium WILL TOO go on Vista. I have it running right now. It installed perfectly. I don't know where that came from that it won't install.

Dell says OFFICE 2000 won't work, but I am using it as we speak with VISTA Home Edition. I don't use it for email as I have AOL, so I don't know if OUTLOOK works. WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT work fine. You can also get most of the 2000 upgrades from Microsoft. OFFICE 2000 seems to be about the only thing that does work with VISTA....Mike

With some problems, Office 2000 will run on Vista.  In particular, there are problems being reported with Outlook address book, some Excel macros, help files and error message.  There is much information available on the web on this matter.  See, e.g.:

Office 2002 and earlier versions are not supported by Microsoft on Vista.  I.e., you would need to seek elsewhere for a solution to any problem that may arise on those versions, if indeed any solution even exists.

Later editions of Office are officially supported by Microsoft on Vista, and evidently work well thereon.

I have Office 2000 Professional running on Vista Home Premium with no problems. However, Office Update automatic updater doesnt work in Vista. I have to manually download and install all the service packs and security patches.

I have to agree with msytpik.  I have Office 2003 running on my system and it is doing fine.  However, it is my understanding that Microsoft is not officially supporting any earlier versions of MS Office in Vista (before 2003).  So for instance, if you can run Office 2000 in Vista without problems, that's great!  Otherwise, it looks like you're on your own to figure out any problems/issues.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I will give 2000 a try, but before i do one more question I have MS works on pc when I got it and I seem to remember that this is a problem when loading Office 2000, any comments. If it is I will have to buy office 2007 but will this be ok with works on pc.

Having MS Works on your pc should not present a problem as far as loading Office 2000.  HOWEVER, if you have MS Word (as part of your MS Works Suite program), you will either need to remove it first (before installing) MS Office 2000, "or" when you load Office 2000, you will have to ensure that the MS Word portion of Office 2000 does NOT get installed (using the custom install method).

This second option "may" be a little tricky.  I seem to recall (when I had Office 2000),that I once tried to install everything EXCEPT MS Word through the custom install option.  The setup routine led me to believe that MS Word would NOT get installed.  However, when all was done, MS Word (from the Office 2000 Suite) had been installed!

This was not good because now I had two versions of MS Word on my pc, one from MS Works and one from Office 2000.  Whatever you do, just don't end up with two versions of MS Word on your computer!  If you do, you are asking for problems/conflicts on your PC.  So I guess the easiest solution would be to go ahead and remove MS Word (from your MS Works Suite program--if it is a part of that program).  Then, when you get ready to install MS Office 2000, you won't have any concerns about a double installation of Word.

When you have the resources, you may want to consider at least getting Office 2003 (if not the newest version).  As you know, Office 2000 is not officially supported in Vista and you will be on your own with any problems.  Of course, if you think it's running great--then maybe you're fine with it.
