Norton Anti-Virus 2006

I noticed that amazon.com has a $20 rebate for NAV 2006. I already have Norton Systemworks 2003 installed (& I've been purchasing the subscription key ea. yr to update my av protection) so all I really need is a subscription key. But I thought I'd take advantage of the savings fr. the rebate & buy the whole nav program. Since I only need to upgrade, do I do anything differently when I install the nav 2006? Or is it a straight install?

You'll probably have to uninstall the 2003 AV first.  I don't know if System Works allows you to uninstall just that part.  If not you may have to uninstall the whole thing, then reinstall without the AV part.

The only new thing with the 2006 AV is that you have to activate it, either online or via an 800#.  No big deal.

And when you do uninstall Nortons, its leaves behind alot of itself all over the place and is very difficult to get completly off the system.  Many have had to reformat and reinstall windows to get it right as I had to do.  No big deal for me, but others do not like doing a reformat and reinstall.  Nortons and AOL a pretty bad about making it difficult to get rid of, once you want to delete it.  Its up to you.  I got PC-Cillon on my system now, no problems, and it is rated better than Nortons.  Never need the entire System Works that Nortons provides, since XP does a pretty good job of cleaning itself.  Only really need is a Anti Virus and Firewall program....

Although I do not use NAV 2006, I am using Symantec Corporate AV, lets think this through.  Although Symantec my make it difficult to switch from their AV to a competiors product, it is against their best interest to prevent you from doing and update from NAV 2003 to NAV 2006.

Thanks to all who posted but esp. to Kenrob whose advice I will take. I'm hoping that the installation of NAV 06 will be simple & your suggestion of what to do regarding SW 2003 is the simplest. At least that's the way I'm hoping it will work.

I think you can just install Nav 2006 and leave NSW 2003 in place. The NAV 2006 install will uninstall the NAV2003 part of NSW 2003 and replace it with the NAV 2006, and give a new year of subscription.

I think you will have problems if you try to uninstall NAV 2003. You also may have some cleaning to do if you uninstall NSW 2003. I would keep NSW 2003.

It worked that way when I installed NAV 2005 into NSW 2003.

Hope it will work for you.

The norton organization's recommendation is to turn off firewalls when using the 2005 virus pro application.  Instructions state the progam is more effective with the firewall off and the virus program protects against worms.  Most everyone else in the world says a firewall is a virtual must.  Which is the better/safer course.

Thanks to all

After installing NAV 2006, I must say that it was an extremely unpleasant experience. You see I use 2 diff. programs that involve keylogging, Keylogger & ActiveWords. NAV viewed them as spyware & disabled them w/o even asking me before it did so. When I restored the 2 programs I couldn't get them working again so I had to figure out how to reinstall them. In the process of disabling them, NAV basically rendered them inoperable.

I just find that Norton is too draconian. For example, it places icons in various places where I don't need or want them instead of asking me whether I want them placed in my startup tray or taskbar. Also, somehow NAV's installation caused other software startup settings to change in ways I didn't want. Now, Windows messenger is always present in my tray even though I don't use it (at least not knowingly). I get constant WM reminders to verify my e mail address (msgs. I never received before NAV 2006).

Just a drag. Next yr. I'm leaving Norton.

YNEVE, where did you get that information? It does not appear to be either credible or accurate. Can you provide a link or a direct quote, and verify the complete product identification?
