Norton Products and Windows XP-SP2 Upgrade

Rather than a download link it seems to be just a news article, Symantec says the download will be available thru the LiveUpdate feature, quote: 

"Consumers will be able to download the SP2 product update by clicking the LiveUpdate icon found in their Norton security software."

It also says:

Symantec encourages its customers to install the product update prior to installing SP2 in order to avoid incorrect reporting from Windows Security Center.

So check Live update before installing SP2.

I'm thinkin that's just a cosmetic thing.  Symantec doesn't want their customers to think something is wrong with NAV if they don't install the update before SP2.  It's my understanding that the update will fix the problem after the installation of SP2 as well.

That Symantec recommendation brings some conflicts...what if you clean install WinXP with SP2 integrated? Then you are forced to install the product update AFTER installing SP2....

Yes, from what Symantec describes the update only brings a fix for the SP2 warning to recognize their products (if definitions are up to date, if NAV,firewall and LiveUpdate are turned on, etc), so one can even claim there's no need for the update if one doesn't care for this cosmetic fix.

Yes, but I agree with Alevasseur, that the Symantec fix would work just a well if you install it after SP2. In your scenario (clean install) you would have to reinstall NAV and use live update to get it updated anyway, so it would reinstall the fix (after you'd got over the problem of getting your current subscription reinstated). Until you did so SP2 would not recognise your NAV, but knowing about the fix, such a message would not worry or confuse you.

It does not matter if you get the 'fix' or not. SP 2's new security center should recognize Nortons antivirus and its firewall (it did on mine). All you have to do is switch off MS's firwall and antivirus. No problems.

You are correct in that SP2 does see that you have Norton's firewall and antivirus installed; however, it does not recognize the "status" of either.  That's a big difference.  It should be detecting if the firewall and antivirus scanner are active or deactivated.

If you run Norton LiveUpdate, you should now receive the program update which permits the XP-SP2 Security Center to detect the status of NIS and NAV. 

If you have Process Guard on your system, BE SURE to turn off Protection prior to running Norton LiveUpdate. After the update is installed, be sure to turn PG LiveUpdate back on.

Hmmm, my NIS 2004 downloaded a fairly sizeable update about 2:30 a.m. (manually initiated with LiveUpdate in Express mode).  Now the XP-SP2 Security Center shows the NIS firewall and NAV present/active/Green ON.  The XP-SP2 Security Center icon in the systray is no longer present because I have met the requirements of a "secure system."

That could very well be the case.  Looks like this is work-in-progress right now for Symantec for version levels and languages.  Either that or it is a marketing ploy to get people to upgrade their Norton products  .  The 2005 series will be out in a month or so... in beta now.

I can upgrade for $29 so I may just go ahead and do it. You are probably right about it being a marketing ploy. It sure wouldn't surprise me.
