Partitioning Software

I need to add a HD to a Dell 2350 so that I can keep an image of the base system for backup on a system that doesn't get the maintenance (security updates, anti-v files, etc.) it really needs.  From what I can see, I cannot really add a separate physical HD.  I didn't look to see before I went and bought a new drive.

I'd like to remove the original drive and install the new drive with at least two, maybe three, partitions.  If I use only 2 partitions, the second will hold an image of the first and perhaps backups.  If I have 3 partitions, then I'd use one for the primary image and backups, and one for all data.  By having smaller logical drives I hope the system will be defragged more often.

I have two questions:
  1. What partitioning software do you like the most?  My local stores carry Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and VCOM Partition Commander 9.0.
  2. If I separate the data, where in the XP setup do I tell it to put "My Documents" on a particular disk (ie. partition)?

Thanks for your help!

artesian79,

What partitioning software do you like the most? My local stores carry Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and VCOM Partition Commander 9.0. If you are going to be installing Windows XP use the partitioning capability of the installation to set up your partitions. No third-party software is needed.

If I separate the data, where in the XP setup do I tell it to put "My Documents" on a particular disk (ie. partition)? I have two partitions, C:\ is for the operating system and applications, D:\ is for data. I have moved "My Documents" from its default location on C:\ (Documents and Settings\Denny's Documents) to D:\.

When you say " I have moved "My Documents" from its default location on C:\ (Documents and Settings\Denny's Documents) to D:\. " where do I define the "mount point?" to XP, or are you saying to just drag and drop it?  If it is just a drag and drop, will XP and the associated software always use the D: drive or can some things assume c:?

I have a need to repartition 2 systems that are up and running so I'd like to use some 3rd party software that lets me do this w/o destroying the contents of the current partition.

Elsewhere I just read about something called Hiren's BootCD.  Have you heard of it?  I'm concerned about legality even though the link I found about it said that all the software was free or demo and therefore legal.

To me it feels too good to be true so I thought I'd check it out on this board.

artesian79,

To move My Documents right-click on the display at the top of Windows Explorer and on the Target tab you can specify the location to which you want the folder moved.

artesian79,

For each account, log into that account and perform the move of My Documents to D:\. The partitioning takes place during the installation. See the reference to Step 5 in this document.

It just struck me that this only takes care of the single userid, not all of them on the system.  Is there an easy way to have them all (even those to be defined in the future) on d:?

I do have one system that I'm putting a new drive in a rebuilding from scratch.  I just went to Help to find info on using XP's partitioning, but cannot find anything.  What am I missing?  I'm assuming this needs to be done before the complete install of XP, or I won't be able to make any changes since the entire drive will be the boot drive.
