Printing in Wordperfect very slow when Outlook open

On the new Dells we just ordered that come with Wordperfect 11, we have noticed that when Outlook is open, it takes a very long time for Wordperfect documents to print.  Has anyone else had similar issues?

We have changed the processor scheduling to background services as recommended on the corel web site (right click my computer, left click properties, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, processor scheduling), and think it helped some, but it still took a document almost 2 minutes to start printing that started in 10 seconds once Outlook was closed.

How  much memory do you have on these systems?  If they only have the 128Mb ram that is probably an issue.  Windows XP really needs 256Mb as "bare minimum" and more is even better.

I haven't checked them all, but the one new one was 2.2GHZ, 256 MB RAM, so at least on that one there must be something additional that is a problem.  I will have to look at the rest to see if that is an issue on others.  Thanks!

This might not apply, but it's worth checking: Make sure Outlook is not set to use MS Word as an email editor. Also check the Add-ins in Outlook. Look under Other, Advanced Options, Addin Mgr.

Outlook is not set to use MS Word as an email editor, so that looks ok.  What should I be checking under the Add-Ins?

This may or may not be of help.  WordPerfect is probably the problem.  It has well-known issues with printing.  The most prevalent of these is that the program expects to find a printer already installed when it is installed.  Presumably yours was loaded at the factory and the printer added thereafter.  One suggested fix is to uninstall the WP application, reboot, and then reinstall.

We can try that on the new Dell's, but we're also having trouble with this on the older computers (Win 98) in which we upgraded just WP to version 11.  As far as I know, those computers would have the existing printer already installed, so I'm still wondering if it isn't something additional yet.

There apparently is an issue with the WP11 interface to the print spooler.  The only other way that I've found to overcome this is to go to the advanced properties of the printer and change the spooling option to Print directly to the printer.

Thanks!  Sometimes we do print larger docs, so we'll just have to see how it goes.  I have heard WP 12 is coming or is out, so maybe this issue will be fixed soon.

That did it!  Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  Just curious - what kind of effect will setting it to print directly to the printer have on other programs?

It should have minimal effect if you aren't printing large documents.  If you endeavor to print your latest novel though, there might be a problem with waiting to edit the corrections.

I am having problems printing from WordPerfect, even when no other applications are running. It took 9 min. for a simple four page text document to print. I went in to Properties and tried to "print directly to printer", but it wouldn't allow me to do that. Any suggestions?

Could you explain further on your statement that it wouldn't let you change to print directly to printer?  What type of printer do you have?  I think our office still has trouble with this even after making this change, but it did seem to speed things up some.

Thanks for responding. When I go into properties and try to change the spooling to print directly to printer, a message pops up that says "Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed." That's it - not further explanation!

Sorry - I don't think I have an answer for you.  I know how frustrating this issue is!  Just curious - which version of Windows are you using, what printer and is the printer directly attached to your computer?  I am not sure any of those would completely bring the problem to light - but might be helpful for anyone more knowledgeable than me to try to figure out the problem.

I'm using Windows XP and have a Dell A940 printer connected directly to my computer. It's home use only, but I do a LOT of work at home and this is driving me crazy!  Thanks for trying to help anyway.....
