Quickset - Runs when docked, but not when undocked (D630)
Howdy all,
My D630 Latitude is having a bit of a problem (well, two problems - both with Quickset, but will start two threads to make it easier to track........)
Problem is, I've installed Dell Quickset (recent version from the website). However, it will only start successfully when the laptop is docked. When the laptop is undocked, I get a windows exception error (like when a process crashes and you get the option to send an error report to Microsoft). On clicking more details, it crashes in Kernel32.dll - like this:
Anyone got any ideas why this would happen? Like I say, it's fine when docked, it's just undocked that's the problem!
Laptop specs:
- Dell Latitude D630
- Windows XP SP3
- T7500 Core2Duo CPU
- 2Gb RAM
First post on here, so if any extra info is needed, let me know........
Thanks! :smileyhappy:

I'm not positive but I believe the fix will be:
- Dock
- Uninstall quickset entirely
- Reboot
- Undock
- Reinstall quickset
- Reboot
- Make sure quick set is working undocked
- Dock once again annd test quick set
It should work in both configurations then. When you set up a notebook, you should always install software that looks for hardware (drivers, the quickset software, etc) while the system is undocked. This is so the program doesn't "lose" part of your computer when you undock. For the same reason, when doing a new installation you should install teh OS and all the drivers before docking the computer for the first time.

That would make sense - and my dock is at my office connected to the wired network. The wireless is available, but not the default connection.
Still playing with the laptop - and so far rather impressed. Though the only thing (apart from the Quickset) that is puzzling me is what the symbol on the right arrow key is for. I know that the 'Fn' key is used to activate the blue functions on the keys (ie. up/down is brightness; left is auto brightness on light sensor) but right is a picture of a keyboard and a sun/light above it. I know my old IBM Thinkpad used to have an LED above the screen that you could turn on to illuminate the keyboard - a rather nifty feature - and wasn't sure if it was for something similar with Dell that unfortunatly I don't have..... :smileysad:

I checked documentation and the picture you posted is a keyboard for the D630 ATG, a semi-ruggedized notebook, that has the illumination for the keyboard. I'm thinking you might have gotten a keyboard meant for that sub-model of the D630 instead of the 'normal' D630 keyboard. There is no change in what the keyboard can do, just the labeling on that particular key.

Thanks Larry, will get to my docking station tomorrow and give it a go........
My second problem, is that when docked, all the "wifi-catcher" options are grayed out. Would this be because the wifi-catcher switch is disabled during docked mode?
All options for it are enabled in the BIOS and the light flashes green and yellow at the correct times, but it would be nice to have access to the options associated with the flashing lights and toggle switch! :smileyvery-happy:
