Repair Installation of XP Media Center Ver 2005 with Update Rollup 2 using Reinstallation DVD
Hi,
I'm really struggling with my computer (Dell Inspiron E1505). Had some stability problems and attempted a fix this past December using Reimage which is supposed to compare OS files on computer with clean versions and replace all missing and corrupted files with clean versions. Fix seemed to go well with minimal residual problems, one being that my anti-virus software (VIPRE) would no longer open.
I've done several remote sessions with Reimage tech support to fix problem and after today's session, my computer is in dire shape. I can't open Outlook Express emails (error messages says parts of msgs cannot be displayed and cannot open message, not enough memory). I cannot open Internet Exporer (no message, just no response). When I attempted a System Restore, I got following error message. DDE Server Window: rstrui.eve - entry point. The procedure entry point GETIRUIPRIV could not be located in dynamic link library urlmon.dll.
The focus of the remote session seemed (to my watching eyes) to be about replacing some dll files. But according to Reimage tech support, they are surprised at this problem since the "put everything back the way it was". Apparently not.
So are they have told me to try several things to get the system back in running order enough that they can do another remote session (not sure whether I should take them up on this even it I can get an internet connection). First they told me to put my XP installation cd in my drive, get a cmd prompt and type: sfc /scannow. I got the following error message. Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. Specific error code 0x000006 ba. (RPC server is unavailable).
Now they are suggesting that I repair my windows installation from my XP cd in offline mode. Selecting Setup Windows XP now (they expressly ordered me to NOT select R to repair using recovery console).
Needless to say, I am not confident about their recommendation and have several questions.
1. Will Setup Windows XP using the reinstallation cd copy the necessary files to the hard drive? I presume that believe there must be missing files.
2. My computer is several years old and I believe it came installed with SP2. SP3 is now installed. Same with Internet Explorer. I now have IE7 installed. Is it possible to do a repair when the version has changed or a new service pack has been installed?
3. Tech support tells me that I have to change the boot order in my system bios to get it to boot from the cd drive. How do I do this?
4. Any better suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Hi Marily,
I have the same machine and I'm having some serious crash issues. The question I can answer for you is how to boot from a CD. Watch the upper right hand corner of your display very carefully. When you boot, as soon as the first Dell screen you'll get a 1 second flash that tells you press F2 to get into setup or F12 to get into boot options. Press F12 and you'll get a screen that will allow you to choose boot from HD, CD/DVD or an internal NIC. Select CD/DVD, and then it will ask you to press any key to boot from CD. If you miss the F12 prompt just shut down and start again.
I don't know about for sure about the SP3 issues but the older versions should install, then you just have to update them. I'm attempting to reinstall XP from my original disk now so I'll let you know what I find out.

Since sfc is giving that error message, then you have to repair XP. First thing is to back up all your personal files on external media (eg, CDs). They should be ok during the repair, but better to be safe. :emotion-5:
Then boot from the XP CD and press R at the first screen to run Recovery Console
At the C: prompt, type in: chkdsk c: /r
Press Enter and go take a nice long nap while it checks your hard drive for errors.
When it's done, reboot from the XP CD and this time press Enter at first screen (not R)
Accept the XP User License and then press R at the next screen for a Repair/Reinstall. Sometimes when the CD has SP2 and the hard drive has SP3, Windows may complain that the files on the hard drive are newer than the ones on the CD, and refuse to run. You'll just have to see what it does...
Assuming the Repair is done, then make sure your antiviral software and firewall are working and go directly to the Microsoft update site to download SP3 and all the subsequent hotfixes for XP.

Thanks to both Rons, I took heart and proceeded with the repair.
I did have to go into BIOS (F2 at first start up screed) to change the boot order.
The Repair worked great, with just a few glitches that took another day to work out. It didn't help that the snow fall interupted by satelite internet so I had to wait for some downloads. It replaced SP3 with SP2 and I had to download all the updates and SP3 again.
I got a Microsoft Feed Synchronization error which went away when I downloaded Internet Explorer 8.
I got a .net framework and ngen error that went away when I removed all versions of .net framework using dotnetfx cleanup tool and then downloaded and reinstalled .net framework 2.0.
Thanks to both of you. I was a bit skeptical that this was the right path and you set my mind at ease.

BTW: You probaby also want to install .net framework 3.5

Funny thing is I live in north central Texas! This is the most snow we have ever gotten since snowfall has been measured...in 135 years.
Do I need to install 3.0 before I install 3.5 or can I just jump ahead without it? Marily

Actually, if you'd just installed .net 3.5 you would have been covered for both 2.0 and 3.0. So just update to 3.5 but don't uninstall the previous versions.
