Restore Points

How often and when are restore points automatically created? Are older ones ever deleted or are they there forever?

This from Microsoft:    Restore points are created at the time of significant system events (such as application or driver install) and periodically (every day). Additionally, users can create and name their own restore points at any time. System Restore has an automatic restore point space-management feature that purges the oldest restore points to make room for new ones, so that a rolling safety net is always kept under the user, enabling the user to recover from recent undesirable changes.   http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwxp/html/windowsxpsystemrestore.asp

You can also Delete all but the Last Restore Point by using "Disk Cleanup" , "More Options" tab , "System Restore", "Clean up"  & later "Cancel".

If I create a restore point before making a change in the registry, and then mess up, if I go to that restore point will it give me the registry as was before I messed up?

I would advise anyone relying on system restore to get them out of trouble to test it occassionally just to ensure that it IS working. Just because you have restore points available does not mean that they will work! I speak from experience. Several months ago one of the MS critical updates somehow corrupted all the restore points on my system. Even the new checkpoints were corrupted and attempts to restore were unsuccessful. Disabling/re-enabling system restore resolved the problem.

I would agree entirely with the previous response.

I installed a number of Windows Updates and a Restore Point was created after each installation.

However, I then proceeded to call MSCONFIG a number of times to suppress some Symantec services and then found that a System Checkpoint had somehow been created after the last Restore Point (from the last Windows Update) but that ALL Restore Points had been deleted.

In theory, reverting to the Checkpoint should have left all of my Windows Updates in place.

I restored from the Checkpoint but found that, not only had all of the Updates disappeared, I also lost Service Pack 1 which had been installed by Dell before I received the machine.

Under what circumstances is a System Checkpoint automatically created?

Windows will automatically create a system checkpoint every 24 hours if no other checkpoints have been created by software installation or by the user. Everything concerning System Restore/Checkpoints is listed here:

You use the word "system checkpoint". Is this the same as a restore point or something different?

Also, sometimes when I go to a Restore Point, it works and other times it doesn't. This seems to be unpredictable. Is there something I should know that I don't?
