SP 2 installation "Access Denied"-did the KB
I've tried to install XP SP 2 on my XP home edition machine through Automatic updates, a number of times. It installs 50-75%, then always says "Access Denied"
Here's all the steps I've tried so far.
1. Installing in normal mode.
2. Installing in safe mode, logged on under Administrators.
3. Followed steps in MS KB article for "Access Denied" during SP2 installation. Checked Permissions under regedit for Administrators, they're set to full control.
4. Ran SpyBot, MS Anti-spyware, Ad-Aware, rebooted system, ran all 3 again, and then tried.
5. Set security settings to default.
6. Ran T.V Media Adware check from MS KB site. No T.V Media found.
7. No viruses found, ran McAfee before trying to install.
8. Currently none of my anti-apyware software products can find any spyware on my pc.
9. Performed disk clean-up and disk defrag.
10. Ordered SP2 CD, and ran installation
After trying all the above, I tried to install XP2 from the CD logged in Administrators from Safe Mode.
I still got the same message.
Everytime I get that message, it tries to remove SP2 components and comes up saying "SP2 could not be uninstalled, windows may not work properly"
I am now unable to use Microsoft Office products on my pc at all, I get a message saying "This operation failed as the program is not installed"
I would appreciate any help I can get related to this issue.

You seem to have covered most of the biggies. A few more.
-go offline, disable all the startups and run the install
-do a system restore to before the first attempt and run the install
-copy the cd to the hard drive and...
-have no USB devices connected (apparently not relevant but who knows)
-all the above
If all fails this link may well do it.

I am having the same problem. I double checked the security and settings. I am logged on as the Administrator. I ran Ad Aware. No luck!
Any changes, updates, suggestions or help otherwise is GREATLY appreciated.
