Spam Filter
I gather there are some programs which allow you to see your emails before you download them from your server so that you can delete spam before it reaches your pc. Anyone recommend a freebie which will work with WinXP and Incredimail? Thanks

Not familiar with Incredimail, but if it's standard POP3 email account there are
are web-based sites that allow you to see the sender/subject of emails in your inbox before contents are downloaded to your PC. You can delete or open to read/respond right there. Great for reading mail from any PC while on the road, but still having them available to download to your base PC.
I use http://mail2web.com all day long. Their totally free(!) site allows you to set up a custom page with all your email accounts listed. Just select one from the dropdown list, type in regular email password and go. They don't store passwords and even allow secure logins; has place to store an address book too so you can send new emails from there. mail2web does not delete the messages from your inbox unless you tell it to, so if the intent is to get rid of spam, you have to delete it from their site otherwise it'll end up in your regular inbox anyway.

Not free, but inexpensive ($15 annually) called Mailblocks.com
I've used this for about two years now and not one, (ZERO< NONE< Nadda) peice of junk e-mail has gotten thur becasue it uses a challenege response method to authenticate. any junk mail mail goes into a pending folder for your approval and after 15 days it gets automatically deleted.
A great value for $15 and can be run as either POP3 or IMAP.

I have a hotmail account (free) and it has an option to block everything except what I set up as allowed. I check it periodically and if there is a "real" message in there I'll send it to my inbox. Otherwise I delete it or hotmail will deleted it after a certain period.
On my POP3 e-mail account, I use the spam blocker in ZoneAlarm pro and it detects all spam and send it to a spam folder in my e-mail program (Outlook). I've been using this for about 2 months and it has zapped every spam message, so far. Actually, I'm using C.A. EZ Armour which is anti-virus plus firewall, etc. The firewall part is the ZoneAlarm Pro.

ANY normal ISP offers:
Mail Server based configurable spam filter
Mail Server based virus filter
Web based mail
for FREE, as a part of your regular Internet/Mail service.
Example: Earthlink
Hope this helps!
