Stop laptop going to sleep

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 laptop & want to add a monitor but laptop goes to sleep when lid is closed. What am I doing wrong or not doing?

Hi Esquimalt,

I will recommend you to change the power options:

  • Click on 'Start'.
  • Click on 'Control Panel'.
  • Click on 'Power options'.
  • On the left side of the screen, click 'Choose what closing the lid does'.
  • Click the drop down on 'When I close the lid' and set it to 'Do nothing'.
  • Change it on both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'.
  • Click on 'Save changes'.

Hi Esquimalt,

Thank you for the reply. I will recommend you to uninstall and re install the video drivers.

To uninstall the video driver:

  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'My Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device manager'.
  • Expand 'Display adapters'.
  • Right click the video driver and click on 'uninstall'
  • Once the driver is uninstalled, click on 'Start' and click on 'Control Panel'.
  • Click on 'Programs and features'.
  • A list of applications will be listed.
  • Look for the video driver's application.
  • Right click on it and click on 'uninstall'.
  • Once done, restart the system.

To re install the video driver:

  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Enter your system's Service Tag and select the operating system.
  • Go to 'Video' and select the appropriate video card driver depending on the video card your system has.
  • Click on 'Download File'.
  • Select 'Single-file download' and click on 'Continue'.
  • Click on 'Save' and save the driver on the desktop.
  • Right click on the driver from the desktop and select 'Run as administrator'.
  • Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart the system after the installation is done and check if the issue is fixed.

In case the issue is not resolved, update the system BIOS:

Note: Please save any unsaved data as your system will restart automatically after updating the BIOS. Disconnect all the external peripherals like printer, camera, scanner, external hard drive, flash drive etc. Also, the battery should be charged 10% or above.

  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/SmwyAf
  • Enter your system's service tag.
  • Go to 'BIOS' and select the BIOS.
  • Click on 'Download Now'.
  • Select 'Single-file Download' and click on 'Continue'.
  • Click on 'Run' and follow the on screen instructions.

This doesn't help, it still sleeps after changing all settings, even after modifying from control panel>internet settings > power management.

 u have told me, i unistalled my display driver and restart the laptop . Its not even starting now ,nothing displaying *********************

don't close the lid it will prevent it from sleeping
